Why Mindy Kaling left the office

To say that people love “the office” would be a dramatic euphemism. The NBC situation comedy, which is based on the brief series of the United Kingdom of the same name, was executed for nine seasons, leaving the air in 2013. Although it has been out of the air for more than a decade, it is still incredibly popular. So much so that it is one of the central things that help keep Peacock afloat in the transmission wars.

Like many shows, the subsequent seasons of “The Office” are quite considered among the worst. There are many reasons for that, but a central reason is that for season 9, several of the program pillars had left. Steve Carell left behind the role of Michael Scott at the end of season 7, for example. But season 8 also saw Mindy Kaling to the member of the cast of Core, known for her interpretation as the dramatic Kelly Kapoor, she also left. He did not help BJ Novak, who plays Ryan, did the same.

So why Kaling left “the office” exactly? For the actor/writer, it was simple. He was doing his own show, and there was no way he could do both realistically at the same time. When explaining his departure, the writers splashed in a plot that saw Kelly move to Miami (Ohio’s, no Florida) with his future Ravee husband. That is also the reason why Ryan left the program, as revealed in season 9 that essentially followed Kelly to Ohio, even if he was not willing to admit that this was the reason. In the same EW 2012 interview, Kaling joked his eventual return to “the office” before he became official. “I will do anything for (the executive producer) Greg Daniels,” he said at that time. “If he wanted him to be in another pair of episodes, if possible given my current schedule, I would do anything to make that possible. I love that group of people.”

Fortunately, well for his word, Kaling returned at the end of the series “The Office”. Like Novak. For better or worse, Ryan and Kelly finally ran together, bringing that chaotic relationship, while offering viewers a closure for these two favorite characters from fans.

It is not as if anyone who abandoned the program had a bad will towards the cast or any person involved with the program. Fans, understandably, were upset since Kelly was responsible for some of the funniest moments of “The Office.” It’s just that, at that time, it had been almost a decade of commitment for someone whose career had taken off. He did not leave much time to explore other opportunities. Kaling, in addition to his work as Kelly, was also a writer and producer of the show. There is no way that he may have launched “Mindy Project” while he continues to do that job.

The question now is, could we see more Kelly Kapoor in the future? After all, “the office” is still remarkably popular and Kaling, although busy, no longer stars, writes and produces its own situation comedy. In addition, “Velma”, its version of the “Scooby-Doo” universe for Max, was canceled after two seasons. Then, its schedule is surely a little more open, if something arises.

Peacock is currently in production in a “office” spin-off that will take place in a dying newspaper. A completely new cast is expected to present, but, if the program works well, who knows? As far as it is worth, Kaling spoke with Good morning America In 2022 and shared his belief that the program could not exist in today’s climate.

“That program is so inappropriate now … The writers with whom I am still in contact now, we always talk about how much of that program we probably could not do now … tastes have changed and honestly what people offend people has changed a lot now.

Kaling also said he believes that Kelly “would have stopped Dunder Mfflin to become an influencer, and then was probably canceled, almost immediately.” Kaling also added that “most of the characters in that program would already be canceled.” We will have to wait and see how the new spin-off works.
