Why Liverpool manager will miss Carabao Cup match against Southampton

Liverpool manager Arne Slot will not be in the technical area when his team visits Southampton in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday (20:00 GMT).

The Reds can get one step closer to a first trophy under the Dutchman when they take on the bottom of the Premier League.

Slot has guided his new club to the top of the top flight after their first 15 league games, two points clear and a game in hand on second-placed Chelsea.

Here’s why the 46-year-old will serve his punishment at St Mary’s Stadium and what the former Feyenoord boss had to say about the situation.

When is Arne Slot discontinued?

The Southampton game will be the only game Slot will miss as part of a one-match ban following Liverpool’s 2-2 home draw against Fulham.

He will hope to return for the semi-finals, should the defending Carabao Cup champions beat their opponents who lost 5-0 at home to Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

That means Slot will once again be on the sidelines when Liverpool take on Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday (4.30pm).

The Carabao Cup tie will go straight to penalties if it ends in a draw, with extra time only used in the semi-finals and final.

Liverpool beat two Premier League teams to reach the quarter-finals, beating visiting West Ham 5-1 and winning 3-2 at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Why is Arne Slot suspended?

“There were a few moments where I could have been given a yellow card,” Slot said after being booked for his reaction to Curtis Jones being booked for a 57th-minute challenge on Alex Iwobi at Anfield.

Liverpool lost left-back Andy Roberton to a straight red card after 17 minutes and came back twice to rescue a point.

“It’s an emotional game and we were one man down,” he added. “It’s frustrating. “It’s good to see our performance after so many setbacks.”

Slot incurred a suspension for three cautions because he also picked up a yellow card during his team’s 2-1 home win over Chelsea on 20 October and 2-2 draw against Arsenal on 27 October.
