What is the Mutant Dinosaur of Jurassic World Rebirth? This is what we know so far

Almost three years after the conclusion of the trilogy “Jurassic World” by Colin Trevorow, Universal Pictures is again bringing the public back to a world full of Dino. This time, it is “Godzilla” (2014) and the director of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” Gareth Edwards to the helm in “Jurassic World Rebirth”, who recently presented his first advance. The film promises a new beginning for the franchise and, above all, many and many dinosaurs. However, these are not the same dinosaurs themselves. These are even more dangerous.

“These are the dinosaurs that did not work. There are some mutations there,” as producer Frank Marshall said Vanity Fair In a previous piece for the movie. “Everyone is based on the real research of dinosaurs, but they look a bit different.”

Those who have seen the “Rebirth” trailer probably took note of a strange dinosaur that appears several times and seems very different from everything we have seen in these films before. It seems largely wrapped in the dark, illuminated only by flares or hidden behind the glass, but it is clear that this is a man -made abomination with prehistoric influences. But what exactly is this mutant dinosaur? That is the big and persistent question. For now, we have some answers, even if the complete image has not yet focused.

“Jurassic World Rebirth” is counting a new story focused on all new characters. It retires five years after the “domain” events of 2022, with the Earth’s ecosystem that has proven to be largely inhospitable for dinosaurs. Those who remain in isolated environments near Ecuador with climates that resemble those who lived about 65 million years ago. However, because the three largest dinosaurs contain the key to a drug in their DNA that can bring benefits to save lives to humanity, a dangerous mission is plotted to recover this genetic material from dinosaurs.

The official synopsis of Universal for “Rebirth” also states that their main characters “will face face to face with a sinister and shocking discovery that has been hidden from the world for decades.” That certainly seems to be hinting at this failed experiment of a dinosaur that we see in the trailer. Edwards, speaking in that same piece of Vanity Fair, spoke a little about the creature, explaining that other famous film monsters influenced the appearance of this mysterious beast:

“When you make a creature, you get a large and massive pot and pour to your favorite monsters from other films and books … Some resentment entered there, some HR Giger entered there, a small T-Rex entered there …”

HR Giger is known for having created the xenomorphs in the “Alien” franchise, which is certainly a terrifying place to begin. Then there is the resentment, that “Star Wars” fans will know how the beast in the basement of the Palacio de Jabba in “Return of the Jedi”. That is certainly present in the mutant dinosaur that we see in the trailers. Add some T-Rex there, which is very present in the arms of the creature, and this sounds like a monster in the most true sense of the word.

“This island was the research installation for Jurassic Park original,” says Zora Bennett of Scarlett Johansson in the “Renaissance” trailer. Dr. Henry Loomis of Jonathan Bailey then adds: “These dinosaurs were too dangerous for the original park. The worst of the worst was here.”

Of course, it is not that dangerous dinosaurs or artificial creatures are new concepts. “Jurassic World” of 2015 introduced the notion of hybrid dinosaurs to the franchise, starting with the indomitable REX. Other hybrids such as the Indoraptor later appeared in the sequel to the 2018 film, “Fallen Kingdom”, with the animated series “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous” that explores this idea even more by incorporating creatures such as Rex and Spinoceroteps Scorpios. So is this mutant dinosaur an earlier attempt of a hybrid? Or is it something completely different?

When writing this article, there are no clear answers, although it is certainly possible that this mutant dinosaur is another hybrid. It is also worth emphasizing, as Zora points out in the “Rebirth” trailer, that the characters in the film meet this creature at the original research center for the first Juhn Hammond Jurassic park (which was previously played by the late Richard Attenborough). This is not the B site, also known as the Sneak Island, which was first introduced in “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” by Steven Spielberg in 1997. This was the place where the Hammond team initially discovered how to make dinosaurs. Without a doubt, there was a steep learning curve from the beginning. Even when Hammond was preparing to open his park, not everything came out according to the plan. I just imagine what went wrong in those first days.

In fact, this mutant dinosaur may have been a failed attempt to give life to a real dinosaur. He has some T-Rex, according to Edwards, and has ax-based T-Rex arms. Was this an early attempt of the Jurassic Park genetics team to create a T-Rex that came out terribly bad? That seems like a possibility based on information that is currently available to us. It also seems a way for “rebirth” to explore more thoroughly the line of Alan Grant (Sam Neill) “This is how you play God” of “Jurassic Park III”.

Not to get too far in the territory of wild speculation here, but it is worth remembering that the abandoned script by John Sayles “Jurassic Park 4” included human hybrids/dinosaurs. Some of the conceptual sketches for the film opened years ago and is possible, however unlikely, that this idea has been dusted by Edwards and the writer David Koepp for “Rebirth”. There is much less evidence of this theory, although it shows that Universal has at least entertained the notion that things become really strange with this franchise in the past. We will have to wait and see what they cooked in that laboratory this summer.
