A veteran Oklahoma state senator was caught on camera going toe-to-toe with a sheriff’s deputy after a traffic stop turned into a “very verbal” ordeal.
Body camera footage obtained by Fox News Digital showed state Sen. Regina Goodwin, D-Tulsa, repeatedly arguing with Tulsa County Sheriff’s Deputy Freddie Alaniz shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Tulsa , Okla.
The scene was recorded by Alaniz’s body camera and began with a tense exchange between the deputy and the elected official. Goodwin was taken into custody after Alaniz said he saw the officer fail to stop at two stop signs.
“Ma’am, I’m not going to ask you again. Can I get your driver’s license or can I take you to jail for running a stop sign?” Alaniz asked Goodwin shortly after stopping her and repeatedly asking for her license. “I’m not going to ask you again. It’s not up for debate.”

The pair went back and forth, and Goodwin argued that the officer was “escalating” the traffic stop.
“That’s not true. It’s not true at all. I was having a conversation and all of a sudden you said, ‘I’m going to arrest you,'” Goodwin said.
“No, I said, ‘Or I can arrest you if that’s what you want,'” Alaniz said.
“I think you really stepped it up,” he said. “No, sir, I mean, why would that be an option for you?”

Alaniz: “Because you refuse to give me your driver’s license.”
Goodwin: “I didn’t refuse to give him my driver’s license.”
“I asked you over five times to give me your driver’s license and you continued to debate over your driver’s license,” the officer responded.
“I wasn’t debating my driver’s license at all, sir, that’s not correct,” he responded.

After the initial contentious exchange, Alaniz detained Goodwin in handcuffs and placed her in his patrol car. His attorney, Mike Manning, who witnessed the scene, spoke with the agent.
“I realize you have a job to do, officer,” Manning said. “I realize Senator Goodwin can be a little stubborn sometimes, but don’t you think you can write her a subpoena or something? She’ll give you her driver’s license.”
“Yes, yes, I can absolutely do that,” Alaniz said. “I don’t need to ask you for your driver’s license 10 times.”
Manning responded: “I saw it. I realize it.”
“I have no problem writing her a citation or letting her go, but I’m the one in charge of the traffic stop, not her,” the officer said. “She blatantly ran two stop signs and I was going to give her a verbal warning and tell her not to do that, but her behavior, the way she was, I can’t allow that.”
If I don’t let other people do that when I make a traffic stop, I won’t let her do it either.

The officer also called his superior to the scene, saying he stopped Goodwin for running two stop signs and “dragging ass” down Tulsa Street.
“He went through this stop sign here and the other one that’s a little further down. He just went up, slowed down and then (went) through them,” Alaniz said. “She was driving so fast that when she hit the puddles of water, she just splashed them. So I walked up and stopped her. And as I was getting out, she got out of her car, ‘Why are you stopping me?’ You know, I got very verbal. I asked her for her driver’s license numerous, numerous times and she wouldn’t give it to me.”

Goodwin was eventually released at the scene. with a date for failing to stop at a stop sign. He faces a court appearance on February 25 at 9 a.m. unless he pays the fine beforehand.
Goodwin represents Oklahoma’s 11th District. She was elected to the state Senate in 2024 and previously served in the state House of Representatives from 2014 to 2024.
