The attacks of Russian unmanned airplanes against energy facilities in the north and south of Ukraine during the night left almost 60,000 customers without electricity, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promising to take reprisals ordering more strikes in the deep of Russia.
Three and a half years after the war, Russia and Ukraine have intensified air attacks in recent weeks. Russia has attacked the energy and transport systems of Ukraine, while Ukraine has been attacking Russian refineries and pipes.
“We will continue our active operations exactly in the necessary way for the defense of Ukraine. The forces and resources are prepared. New deep blows have also been planned,” Zelenskyy said on the social media platform X after meeting with the main general of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrsky, without giving more details of the plans.
The largest private energy company in Ukraine, DTEK, said Russian drones had attacked four energy facilities in the Odessa region during the night, and local authorities reported that 29,000 people were left without early electricity on Sunday.
The most affected was the port city of Chornomorsk, on the outskirts of Odesa, where houses and administrative buildings were also damaged, said Oleh Kiper, the governor of the widest region of Odesa.
“The critical infrastructure is operating in generators,” Kiper said in the telegram messaging application, added that a person had been injured as a result of the attack.
The DTEK electric company said that emergency repair work would begin as soon as the military gave everything.
In waters near the Puerto Grande and strategically important, a civil bearer flying the Belize flag suffered minor damage after hitting an unknown explosive device, two sources told Reuters under condition of anonymity.
Chornomorsk is one of the three Ukrainian ports operating in a maritime transport corridor that joins the black sea with the Mediterranean.
The Russian drones also attacked the region of northern Chernihiv in early Ukraine on Sunday, damaging the energy infrastructure and leaving 30,000 homes without electricity, including part of the city of Nizhyn, said Vicheslav Chaus, the local governor.
The Ukrainian army said that Russia had attacked Ukraine with 142 drones during the night and that their air defense forces managed to tear down 126 of them. However, drones reached 10 locations.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said their forces had hit the Ukrainian port infrastructure in the capital, kyiv, who said it was used for military purposes. Reuters could not independently verify the reports.
The intensified struggle of both parties in recent weeks occurs when the president of the United States, Donald Trump, leads an impulse to finish the war, which began in February 2022, when Moscow launched a large -scale invasion.
The Kremlin said Sunday that the European powers were hindering Trump’s peace efforts and that Russia would continue its functioning in Ukraine until Moscow saw real signs that kyiv was ready for peace.
Moscow has twice launched large -scale attacks last week, killing dozens of civilians and destroying their homes and urban infrastructure.
The special envoy of the United States in Ukraine said that Mortal Russian attacks undermined Trump’s efforts to end the war, while Pope Leo requested the fire and dialogue on Sunday.
“It is time for those responsible to renounce the logic of weapons and take the path of negotiation and peace with the support of the international community,” Leo said in his Sunday prayer with pilgrims in the Plaza de San Pedro in Rome.
