Top Gun 3 will give Tom Cruise to Maverick a very different type of crisis

“Top Gun: Maverick” was a stimulating surprise. It is not only one of the best films of 2022, but it is also one of the best examples of a sequel inherited from Done Right, which is appropriate taking into account the director of “Maverick”, Joseph Kosinski, had previously delivered the best sequel inherited from the 2010, “Tron: Legacy”. The film is a show in its purest form, with exquisite visuals, phenomenal action and acrobatics, a murderous soundtrack and a bit of characters development such as a pleasure.

Commercially, “Maverick” was an overwhelming success to start, so, of course, a third “Top Gun” movie is being commissioned. But where could I go? In terms of history, “Maverick” has already felt a bra for the biggest story of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise). Then there is the question of the images. Taking into account that “Maverick” placed cameras inside Jet’s real planes, is there any “top gun 3” form could overcome that? Can things have even higher, perhaps to a place with golden streets?

I could spend a while before the conclusion of the improbable “Top Gun” trilogy comes out, but we are beginning to get some juicy details about what to expect from it. Earlier this year, the writer of “Maverick” Christopher Mcquarrie revealed that he knows what the story of “Top Gun 3” will be, although he refused to elaborate. Now, while promoting his new movie “F1” in an interview with GQKosinski has talked a little more about the movie and how things can take even beyond placing actors in honest to good jets:

“We are thinking much bigger than … it is a really existential crisis that Maverick has in this, and it is much bigger than him. It is an existential question that Maverick has to deal with, which would make ‘Maverick’ feel small, I believe, as a movie, compared to what we are talking about.”

Where can Top Gun 3 go? And Brad Pitt comes for the trip?

Kosinski also described the story of the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” as “a last trip”, saying that there is still “more story to tell” when it comes to Pete Mitchell’s character.

While this does not shed much light on “Top Gun 3”, he says a lot about the future of the largest franchise. As we speculate when the rumors of “Top Gun 3” began to circulate, the most important question about a third “top weapon” is whether it will continue to focus on the starting training academy or to reality. “Maverick” managed to do both, spending time in training (but with the graduates of the Academy) before achieving a mission inspired by the inspiration of “Star Wars” really great, but seems unlikely that we will train again once more. That means that Mitchell will be forced to return to the service after retiring or “Top Gun 3” will focus on a new and even larger mission.

Meanwhile, Kosinski is already thinking about ways to extend his time working with fast cars, since he already conquered the heavens. When GQ asked about the star of “F1” Brad Pitt saying that he would like to work with Cruise, Kosinski had an idea what to put the two actors. Unfortunately, since Pitt specifically said that he only worked with Cruise if they were firmly on the ground and not hanging from the plans, it seems unlikely to be shown in a third “Top Gun” movie. Even so, there is a way to make it work.

“At this time, it would be Cole Trickle, who was the character of (Cruise’s) ‘Days of Thunder’, we discovered that he and Sonny Hayes (Pitt’s character in ‘F1’) have a past,” Kosinski said. “They were rivals at some point, maybe crossed … I heard about this epic battle of Go-Kart in ‘Interview with a vampire’ that Brad and Tom had, and who would not pay to see those two face face to face?”

“F1” opens in theaters on June 27, 2025.
