Glen Johnson believes that the young Chelsea team can emulate his victory in the Premier League with the blues next season, but the former defender of England knows that his club of the Club World Cup could affect the players of Enzo Maresca.
The six times champions have not set up a credible title offer since their last victory in 2016/17, and Maresca also faces the challenge of having just over a month between the end of the competition in the United States and the visit of Crystal Palace to begin its high flight schedule.
“It is a good concept, from the perspective of fans, when you have the best teams in the world playing with each other and normally you cannot see that,” says Johnson about the FIFA expanded club expanded.
“As a player, you wait for summer because you need a break to face the demanding season, so then go and have many other competitive games when you can rest, do not feel good.
“The games are very demanding and now they play so many soccer games. That with an important tournament that is coming or something: when do children rest?”
Chelsea finished fourth in the first season by Maresca, with a series of two victories in 10 league games between December and February turning his strong beginning into a battle to qualify for the Champions League despite the strong investment.
“The most important thing that disappointed them last year was consistency,” says Johnson, speaking through 888Sport.
“They put some performances in which you thought ‘Hell Bloody, they will be difficult to overcome’, but then they would go and lose a silly game, what you just can’t do if you go for the title.
“There were games that I saw on the bridge where I thought they were the best I had seen in years, but then they left the gas for the next game.”
Maresca has had a summer occupied outside the field, including the signings of striker Joao Pedro de Brighton & Hove Albion for £ 60 million and the extreme Jamie Gittens of Borussia Dortmund for up to £ 52 million.
The striker Liam Deap arrived from the city of Ipswich for £ 30 million, while the extreme is about to complete a movement of £ 52 million from Palmeiras and midfielder Dario EsSUGO costs £ 18.5m of Sporting, between a set of signings with a remarkable age profile.
“I like the fact that they are happy to spend money on youth, for the future,” says Johnson, who signed as an 18 -year -old in 2003 and won the Premier League and EFL 2004/05 Cup for four years as part of a team with the tastes of the legendary captain John Terry.
“At the same time, you must have a balance with the current players who can make you compete almost immediately. We had much more established players: most of the boys were already international.
“We were more biased for renowned players, where you know what you are getting. You would be 18 years old and the others are about 25 years old.
“You are not so afraid to make a mistake because you have Marcel Desilly by your side or JT (Terry) or someone like that.

“It’s not that you are making mistakes that change the game, but it only takes away a little pressure.
“They believed in you because they knew what they could do when training together. You wouldn’t be playing if they didn’t want it or needed you there.
“They were able to stay calm and prevent you from getting carried away. They would prevent you from getting excited and they would involve you too much in the attacks when we were winning 1-0 or things like that, just learning the game while you are playing.”
One of Johnson’s successors on the right side for Club and Country, Reece James, is a player with a high risk of schedule demands after a series of injuries that have restricted the availability of the 25 -year -old.
“Normally he plays some games and then his body disappoints him,” observes Johnson, who understands James’s situation. “You just need to try to handle your body and get some luck.
“When you go out of the treatment room, in the first place, it is difficult to get a party fitness. Then there is a construction impulse. We all hate to be in the treatment room, so you are buzzing when you go out of it.
“Being back two or three games later is simply destroying the soul. I did it many times, every time they told me” these will be eight weeks, “I would be trying to turn it into four or five, because you don’t want to be there.”
“You feel good, but when you are doing the rehabilitation, you do not try as much as you do in a day, you can do it with the handbrake, so to speak, to speak, and take your time.
“But then you must do what you have to do, and that is when you can start receiving recurrent injuries. It’s because the boys want to play again.”
Chelsea faces the Brazilian side Fluminense in New Jersey in the semifinals of the Club World Cup on Tuesday (20:00 BST), when a victory sent them to a final in the same environment against Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid on Sunday (20:00).
While the finals are enormously lucrative for the club, there has been a lot of debate about whether players are completely motivated to risk injuries at the end of a nine -month season in what has often been a scorching heat.
“You do not want (injuring yourself) and being out for 10 weeks,” says Johnson, whose achievements during his exceptional senior career of 16 years included a victory of the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008, raising the EFL Cup with Liverpool in 2012 and going to two World Cup and Euro 2012 editions on the way to win 54 Caps.
“They will not need preseason because they will not have enough to get fit. It is the same with the friendlies: you do not go 100% because you have them for a reason.
“To put yourself in shape, you strive at the right moments. But at the same time, you are thinking that” this is not as important as the first game of the Premier League season “, and you must be sufficiently fit for that.”
