The British prime minister, Keir Starmer, refused Thursday to evaluate the repeated calls of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to make Canada the State 51, before Trump cut the response of the United Kingdom leader completely during a joint press conference.
Starmer asked himself if he or King Carlos III were worried about Trump’s rhetoric towards a member of the Commonwealth at the end of a visit to the White House that included multiple meetings on topics such as trade and war in Ukraine.
The British leader said that the issue of Canada did not appear during those conversations and tried to highlight the historical friendship between the United Kingdom and the United States.
“I think you are trying to find a division between us that does not exist,” said Starmer.
After continuing with his answer for a moment, Trump interrupted with “that’s enough, thanks” and called another reporter.
Canada is a member of the British Commonwealth of ancient colonies. While King Charles is technically the head of state of those countries, they are free to make their own decisions as independent nations.
In Canada, the king is represented by the general governor who acts on the Council of the Head of Government, the Prime Minister.
King’s allies and Canada in Europe have remained silent, while Trump repeatedly speaks of the United States for taking over Canada, at a time threatening the “economic strength” to do so.
Although Canadian officials have tried to minimize Trump’s threats as insertious, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was heard telling a group of Canadian workiers and labor leaders earlier this month that Trump’s threat was “something real”, linked to the desire of his administration to access the critical minerals of Canada.
Trump has threatened to impose pronounced tariffs on Canada and Mexico, citing what he says are great fentanyl flows that arrive in the United States from those countries. The tariffs will take effect on Tuesday after a 30 -day pause, Trump confirmed this week.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Melanie Joly, told journalists after a trip to Europe earlier this month that many European leaders do not fully understand how the Trump administration is challenging Canada’s economy, when asked why few national leaders have spoken against Trump’s threats against Canada.
“According to my conversations with many European colleagues, many of them are not necessarily completely aware of what is happening, first in the United States and secondly in Canada. Each country in the world is looking at its own reality, ”he said.
“I think it was a attention call, so that Europeans listen to what we are happening.”
Joly also added that he did not raise Trump’s comments that Canada was absorbed by the United States with Secretary of State Frame Rubio during a meeting with G7 colleagues in Germany. She said she responded when some American senators “were making jokes about it” apart from a summit in Munich.
“I said it’s not fun. And this is a matter of respect from our country, the respect of our leaders and the respect of our people. And I always answer the same thing, which is (that) we will be the best neighbor, the best allies, but we will never be a state and we will never be a colony, “he said.
“Canadians are proud people, brave people, and do not accept any form of rhetoric that is against our own identity as a country.”
Canada’s ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, told Global News last week to talk about making Canada the State 51 “almost never” appears in their discussions with officials in Washington.
However, she said that Trump’s Republican allies have also not rejected their threats to annexation.
