The 268 members of Parliament present on Tuesday voted unanimously in support of the Ukrainian President.
The Parliament of Ukraine has overwhelmingly approved a resolution that affirms the legitimacy of the stay of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, affirming the constitutionality of deferring the presidential elections while the country is at war.
The 268 members of Parliament present on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve the resolution, while another 12 parliamentarians were not present during the session.
The resolution was designed by parliamentary leadership as a symbolic sample of support for Zelenskyy, whose regular term in office ended in May.
Last week, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, accused Zelenskyy of being a “dictator” since he has not celebrated elections in recent years, echoing the statements previously made by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, according to Ukrainian law, elections cannot be held as much time as a martial law persists throughout the country. The martial law was declared after the Russian invasion in February 2022.
“The Verkhovna Rada remembers once again that the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy was chosen in free, transparent democratic elections. The Ukrainian people do not question their mandate or the Verkhovna Rada, ”said the resolution.
The document also referred to article 108 of the Constitution of Ukraine, according to which the head of state of the State remains in power until the next elected president assumes the position.
The Ukrainian Parliament votes unanimously to affirm the legitimacy of President Zelensky and the constitutional mandatory requirement that avoids elections during martial law.

Trump had also claimed that the Ukrainian leader only had an “approval index” of 4 percent in the surveys, repeating Russian media reports.
But according to a survey conducted this month by the International Institute of Sociology of Kyiv, Zelenskyy has an approval index of 57 percent.
Even if this is below the 90 percent peak just after Russia’s invasion, this is a sign that Zelenskyy is “maintaining his legitimacy,” the institute said.
Tuesday’s vote in the Ukrainian Parliament was a reversal of the previous day, during which the resolution received 218 votes, falling eight votes for the threshold 226 votes necessary to approve.
Zelenskyy has so far been able to change the majorities in Parliament to approve the legislation, since enough members of the Parliament of his own party are not always present.
Without parliamentary support, international agreements, such as a possible peace treaty with Russia or a raw material agreement proposed with the US, cannot be ratified and enters into force.
