The rules of time travel can be a little complicated depending on the writer, with back to the future It’s considered the standard of the genre, but generally everyone who ends up going to the past shouldn’t try to change too much. The butterfly effect, which The Simpsons‘Treehouse of Horror was shown in its best possible light thanks to a malfunctioning toaster, saying that the slightest change can greatly alter the future. Netflix’s latest surprise hit time cutHe takes great advantage of this by leaving a young woman 21 years in the past to prevent her sister’s murder, and as a result, forever alters the timeline.
The worst part of time cut It’s there in the brief synopsis, with the understanding that going back 21 years means that most of the action takes place in 2003, which explains why your back hurts right now. Outer benches Star Madison Bailey has proven she’s great at teen drama acting in that other Netflix hit, but here she plays Lucy, a young girl who delights in stopping Sweetly Slasher from killing her older sister, Summer. The murderer’s rampage in 2003 had left the city scarred forever, with the present showing a ramshackle downtown and everyone having a sense of unease and emotional detachment from life, clearly following a stage direction of “acting depressed for the mere act of breathing.” “.
She is soon sent back to 2003, thanks to a time machine inside a barn, which is explained later, and meets her still-alive sister (another Netflix star, Ginny and Georgia Antonia Gentry) and her friends, Quinn (played by Griffin Gluck, best known for another Netflix series, Locke and key) and Emmy (Megan Best, not a Netflix star, but she was the woman saved by Bob Odenkirk on the bus in Nobody). Through a series of events, Lucy attempts to keep Summer alive and stop Sweetly Slasher, but in the process, she accidentally causes several deaths, breaking one of the golden rules of time travel.
time cut can be compared with DarkGerman sci-fi time travel series, as they both end up exploring similar time travel concepts and prove that sometimes breaking the common rules of the genre can be for the best. Where the two differ is that Dark is packed with jaw-dropping performances, multidimensional characters, and a twisting plot, while time cut It’s a slasher. It’s not a knock against it because it’s deliciously cheesy and everyone got the assignment while filming, but they know what they’re getting into.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the cheesy acting and silly plot twists of time cut, and I would say that if you liked the time loop of happy death dayYou’ll probably enjoy a bit of the blast to the past in this movie.. The ending raises a lot of questions for time travel fans that could be discussed and debated for a long time, which is honestly more than I expected from watching the movie. For slasher fans, there are no notable kills, but at least you’ll never find out Sweetly Slasher’s identity before the big reveal, or at least I didn’t, although I had my theories.
time cut is a short slasher rollercoaster, lasting only 92 minutes, something I also appreciated about the film as it didn’t overstay its welcome and didn’t try to do too much. This is the kind of movie that, in 2003, would have gone straight to Best Buy’s DVD bin, but in 2024, it’s the kind of cheap content that streamers release almost daily. The concept of a time travel slasher isn’t new, but at least it’s fun and never takes itself too seriously.
time cut It is currently streaming on Netflix.
