The Supreme Court of Brazil orders house arrest for former President Jair Bolsonaro

The Brazilian Supreme Court ordered on Monday the house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro, in trial for allegedly leading an attempted coup after losing the 2022 elections.

The court of the Court, Alexandre de Moraes, issued the order, saying in his decision that Bolsonaro had violated the precautionary measures imposed on him by publishing content in his son’s social networks channels.

By formally accusing Bolsonaro earlier this year, Attorney General Paulo Gonet accused the former president of heading a criminal organization that allegedly planned to revoke the elections, the president of Veneno, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and shot Moraes, an adversary of Bolsonaro for a long time.

Monday’s order followed one of the Superior Court last month that ordered Bolsonaro to use an electronic ankle monitor and imposed a curfew on his activities while the procedures are ongoing.

The last decision keeps the leader of the extreme right under ankle monitoring, allows only family members and lawyers to visit and take all the mobile phones of their home in Rio de Janeiro.

Bolsonaro is forbidden to run in the 2026 elections after the judges with the country’s main electoral court ruled that he abused his power and threw unfounded doubts about the country’s electronic voting system.
