Jack Black is Jack Black in The choice of destinationplaying a fictional, exaggerated version of himself, or maybe just himself on a normal day. His larger-than-life personality blurs the line between actor and character, so it’s sometimes hard to tell.
Kyle Gass, who also plays himself, nails the role by “riding Jack Black’s coattails,” as he proudly admits every time he pushes. Together they form Tenacious D, the self-proclaimed “rockiest band in the world.”
Jack runs away from home as a child when his religious father, Bud (Meat Loaf), forbids him from listening to metal due to its satanic imagery. On the street, Jack meets Kyle, a guitarist who is equal parts slick and stoned. With Jack’s powerful vocals and Kyle’s riffs, they form Tenacious D and begin playing open mics to mixed reactions and booing crowds.
When they discover the legend of the Pick of Destiny, which is said to have been forged from Satan’s tooth, they set out to find it, believing it would turn them into rock gods. The power of choice brings fame, ego, and tension between the two as they struggle with their dreams, pride, and figure out how to pay the rent.
The best way to see the choice of destination
In essence, The choice of destination thrives through his music. When I received the companion album a week before the film’s release, I was disappointed when I finally went to see it. Like most good musicals, the songs give away the pace of the story, so I already knew how it would all end. Maybe the idea was to have audiences sing along in theaters, but judging by the blank stares around me, most people came expecting a standard Jack Black comedy.
The choice of destination Works best on repeated viewings. Once you are familiar with the songs and their transitions, the story becomes stronger. “Storm the Gates” is hilarious as an audio track of Jack narrating his heist plans in real time, but seeing him perform it on screen makes it special.
Dave Grohl’s cameo as the Devil is also pure joy. Watching him play some of the coolest drums ever put on film is worth the price of admission alone.
