The OnePlus Open was a surprisingly good device, especially considering that it was the company’s first attempt to make a folding phone. Unfortunately, in a Community note published todayOnePlus announced that adequate monitoring of the open will not arrive in 2025.
In the publication, OnePlus Open Product Manager, Vale G., said the company “has carefully considered the moment and our next steps in folding devices, and we have made the decision not to release a folding this year.” It is definitely an annoyance, particularly for fans of devices with flexible screens in the United States, which cannot easily buy Chinese brand phones such as Huawei, Xiaomi and the OnePlus Oppo parent company. It is also a bit surprising considering that the open hit the shelves more than a year and a half at the end of 2023, so it was due to an update.
The only positive conclusion of this is that, although the OnePlus Open 2 is not happening this year, the company is not renouncing the folds forever, saying: “This is not a step back, it is a recalibration. Our commitment to the Innovation is stronger. For the owners of the Open, OnePlus also said that the phone will continue to receive regular software and safety updates as scheduled.
Unfortunately, this means that for the US market, there are only two main manufacturers that continue to make large folding phones: Samsung and Google, whom we hope to announce models renewed at some point at the end of this summer. What is worse is that when it comes to the Galaxy Z folding line, the recent lack of competition seems to have allowed Samsung to loosen, with the Z FOLD 6 that only offers medium improvements on previous generations. So we hope that OnePlus can join the fray soon to help stimulate competition between the handful of telephone manufacturers that still try to innovate with a small but slow niche.
