The X files It has many great secondary characters, but none is as loved as lonely gunmen, a trio of nerd computer types that often help Fox Mulder. It is not difficult to see why these characters are so popular. After all, “Nerd computer types” describes much of the fan base, especially in the 90s when the show was new. Fans who are always reflected in the lonely gunman can be particularly intrigued to know that these nerds were inspired by some attendees of the theory of a UFO convention of the conspiracy.
The true lonely gunmen
When the lonely gunmen appeared in the episode of season 1 “Ebe”, no one had any reason to believe they were based on real people … In fact, no one knew if these characters would make another appearance. That was certainly true for episodes writers Glen Morgan and James Wong, who thought they did a bad job with this episode until they learned how much fans online loved these new characters. And it was Morgan who later revealed that the lonely armed men were inspired by a true trio of people who met at a UFO convention that he attended shortly before starting to write The X files.
He attended this convention together with Marilyn Osborn, who went on to write the memorable X-Files Episode “forms”. Morgan states that this trio of conspiracy theorists left him an impression, and once he began writing for the series, he thought for himself: “Well, these people have to get here somewhere.” He had wanted to write them in the program before and regretted: “He took them a long time.”
If you are more a scully than a mulder, you could be skeptical about how much the lonely gunmen we saw on the screen looked like the real men that Glen Morgan found himself in the UFO convention. After all, these favorite X-File characters of fans are legendary extravagant, so it is natural to think that their personalities or gestures were exaggerated compared to their analogues of real life. However, Morgan insists that this is not the case and that “I put them almost literally in history.”
In fact, the mischief of the lonely gunmen in “EBE” were directly inspired by the pranks of the true nerd trio at the UVNI Convention. According to the special DVD characteristics for this episode, Glen Morgan and James Wong were particularly impressed by the true nerds giving a speech about how everyone’s money is magnetized and nobody knows. This inspired the moment in the episode in which Byers disarmed a $ 20 ticket, a fun screen on the screen that was so difficult that Frohike actor Bruce Harwood ended up destroying (in the estimate of Morgan) about $ 120 of Invoices before doing well.
Lonely gunmen may have seemed a trio of conspiracy theorists than life when they appeared in “EBE”, but it turns out that they were directly inspired by the real assistants of a UFO convention with excessive personalities in a similar way. That makes these dear companions a bit like most of the best X-Files Stories: a mixture of truth and fiction. And as for the UFO attendees, we suspect that, as the truth, they are still out there and, hopefully, they are very proud of the iconic characters of the pop culture they inspired.
