Right now, Caped Crusader fans are eating well: the Penguin Matt Reeves spin-off the batman It turned out to be a monster hit, and the acclaimed director is hard at work on his second superhero outing. Meanwhile, there are even more Batman movies on the horizon, courtesy of James Gunn, the DCU visionary whose Superman The movie’s trailer gives us an idea of what he and his team could do with the Dark Knight. But the best next movie won’t be about Batman: Mike Flanagan’s Clayface movie has been greenlit and, like the Penguin show, will serve as a deep dive into one of the Bat’s biggest bad guys.
Understandably, Warner Bros. waited to see what audience reception it would have. the penguin It was before giving the green light to a feature film focused on a completely different Batman enemy. First of all, the penguin It seemed like quite a gamble; Making a Batman villain show without Batman seemed about as crazy as Sony making a Spider-Man villain movie series without everyone’s favorite webhead. Fortunately, the penguin was a huge hit with fans and critics alike, and gave the studio the confidence to greenlight a Clayface movie written by Mike Flanagan.
At this time, Flanagan is the only name attached to the project and will only be writing the script. For horror fans, however, it’s Flanagan’s involvement on any level that makes this Clayface movie so exciting: On the big screen, he’s responsible for directing such spooky hits as oculus, Be quietand Doctor Sleep. On the small screen, he has been the showrunner of some must-see television broadcasts, including The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight mass.
We don’t have many official details about the Clayface movie yet, except for its release date: Warner Bros. intends to release the film on September 11, 2026. But Flanagan’s involvement heavily hints that this is a terror. In addition to his aforementioned genre resume, his other big upcoming projects include directing a new Exorcist film and create a Carrie Program for Amazon based on the novel by Stephen King. Smart, moody horror is what the man does, and it’s honestly a relief to know that James Gunn’s next DCU will explore other genres instead of using the DCEU’s strategy (aka “make it like Marvel but infinitely worse”) .
Speaking of Gunn, it’s still unclear whether the Clayface movie will take place in the DCU proper or, as the penguintakes place in the universe separate from the batman. We also don’t yet know the exact comic version of Clayface that the film will adapt, although it’s likely that it will be based more directly on the pathos-tinged version of Batman: the animated series. That incarnation has been played with hilarious perfection by Alan Tudyk in the excellent harley quinn animated series, but we can’t help but hope for a horror film that focuses on the more serious aspects of this shape-shifting actor-turned-criminal.
It is possible that clay face and other DC movies under James Gunn’s supervision will fail, of course, and the actors involved may want shapeshifting abilities of their own if this latest attempt at a cinematic universe crashes and burns. However, at this point Warner Bros. has a recent history of immense success with the batman and the penguinand they have a horror legend writing a movie about the Caped Crusader’s most misunderstood enemy. As huge fans of the Dark Knight, we’re excited beyond belief, and can only hope for a cinematic superhero revival that makes the DCEU nothing more than a distant, painful memory.
