Science fiction films have always been inspired by great stories written by imaginative authors, and some of those films are not even based on complete novels, but short stories and novels.
Whether it’s “who is there” by John W. Campbell? becoming John Carpenter’s The thingPhilip K. Dick’s “can be remembered for you wholesale” becoming Total memoryor “The Sentinel” by Arthur C. Clarke 2001: a space odyssey, The science fiction story has had an indelible impact on movies.
But, a short science fiction story obtained an adaptation in the 90s and has quickly forgotten. And it is one of the boldiest and most cheeky adaptations in the history of science fiction.
That is why we need to save the 1995 film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Harrison Bergeron.
Kurt Vonnegut should not need an introduction, but just in case, he was a prolific and shocking writer who liked to play with gender. Your seminal novel, Matadero fiveIt is a unique turn in science fiction and war stories that obtained its own film adaptation in 1972. For more information about that, look at the Gender podcast episode in Matadero five.
The short story of Vonnegut “Harrison Bergeron” raises a United States in which each and every one of the differences between people are counteracted by several disadvantages to obtain an equal level for all humans. For example, people with traditionally beautiful facial characteristics use ugly masks.
The short story deals with the parents of Harrison Bergeron, an exceptionally brilliant and strong teenager that the government takes away the skill.
In short history, Harrison’s parents watch a television broadcast that is interrupted by Harrison in an attempt to rebel against the government. I will not reveal the rest of the story as everyone should read it, but it is enough to say that history does not have the brightest belief in humanity.
When it was time to adapt the story in a movie, the 1995 TV Showtime movie decided to take many creative freedoms. The story takes place in 2081, but the film decides the year 2053 due to the artistic decision to portray the fool This movie.
Harrison (played by Samwise Gamgee himself, Sean Astin) is still an abnormally brilliant child, but when the government carries it in the film, it is under the pretext of receiving a wolf. What ends up being revealed is Harrison’s selection in the secret organization that actually directs the world.
Yes, in him Harrison Bergeron Movie, the idea is that an smart clique keeps the world secret by making society as average as possible. They even choose a Schlub armchair to be the president and it’s Eugene Levy!
The head of this shadow government, played perfectly for Star, we throwChristopher Plummer himself, illustrates why this is the way the world should be to avoid wars and devastation. In doing so, it means depriving the Incredible Art and Expression Society. And Harrison now has to be part of this oppressive system.
He decides to work in the government’s television division and, finally, plans a variation of what happens in the story: he takes care of the transmission room and begins to play classic movies and music for the public that have been hidden for generations.
When he finally stopped, he has given the opportunity to go to the most popular interview program in the Nation, presented by a Howie Mandel jester, and say that everything was a joke. Once again, I will not ruin exactly what happens, but it won’t make you feel good!
Look, I will be completely in advance with you, I love the original short story and the 1995 movie is definitely doing everything possible to capture the martlet satire of the Vonnegut piece. The movie and history are dark comedies in your heart. However, the tone of the film and its television production tend to a cheaper and cheaper execution.
Fortunately, the remarkable cast that I already mentioned brings a lot of Playhouse charm to all production. Sean Astin is cherub and appropriately youth like Harrison, which makes his trip even more heartbreaking at the end of the film. Plummer is exactly who elegments as a figure of villain authority that could convince you to become an authoritarian.
And although the film uses Vonnegut’s story for a starting point rather than a direct adaptation, it manages to fit more than a few references to history as a television broadcast with a disabled dancer. And the film is committed to the darkest beliefs that Vonnegut postulates on anti -intellectualism and the suppression of artistic expression.
It is not a secret masterpiece but Harrison Bergeron It is the type of defiant science fiction film that we should not leave in the dump. And that looks like the case. While I write this script, the film is not available in any transmission or video on demand.
You can definitely see it if you know where to look, and that is not too difficult, but it is unlikely to be in a profession of high quality or professionally restored. And who knows how long those digital versions will arrive at your fingertips?
Harrison Bergeron It is an example of why we need to worry about preserving art. As more and more of our archive means are put under the blockade and the key to monolithic corporations, we risk corporations to have exclusive authority about what it deserves to be preserved.
Just look at any number of favorite Netflix programs and movies of fans who do not have physical releases. Hell, BarbarianAn important launch of a great study that went well at the box office does not yet have a physical launch.
If these types of high profile projects can be suffocated, think about all the art that you will never see simply because nobody cared enough to keep it. Harrison Bergeron It is not a good or bad film, it is perfectly fine, but it deserves recognition, adequate file and availability for the public like any piece of artistic media.
If you do not believe that this is the case, why don’t you turn on your headband with Zapping Brain and an exhibition that you will forget that you will forget in a week that will disappear from the broadcast next year?

Okay, apart from Scarkiness, it is very fun to make these videos, especially on issues like this. Vonnegut’s short story means a lot to me, and I really care about dark movies and the preservation of the media, so sincerely, thanks for seeing.
