Eggnog has a custard-like flavor with a hint of alcohol. Traditionally made with dairy (often a combination of milk and heavy cream, as in Martha’s version), it is sweetened with sugar and thickened with eggs. Some recipes involve cooking the egg yolks, while others, like this one, keep the eggs raw. In raw recipes, the yolks are mixed with the dairy while the whites are beaten separately and incorporated before serving.
Eggnog is usually added with brandy, rum, whiskey, bourbon, or a combination of these, and finished with a pinch of ground nutmeg.

To make the TV personality’s signature eggnog, start by whisking the egg yolks in a very large bowl until they become thick and pale. Add the sugar little by little, continuing to beat until completely incorporated. Then, add the milk and 2 cups of cream to create a smooth, creamy mixture. Add the bourbon, rum, and cognac, then cover and refrigerate for up to a day to allow the flavors to blend.

When ready to serve, beat the whites until stiff peaks form and gently fold them into the eggnog. Beat the remaining 1 cup cream until it forms stiff peaks, then fold it into the mixture. For an alternative presentation, fold half the whipped cream into the eggnog and use the remaining half as a topping. Finish by sprinkling freshly grated nutmeg on top before serving. Store-bought eggnog often includes fillers, preservatives, and artificial ingredients, but making it from scratch gives you complete control over the quality of the drink. Martha’s recipe is refreshingly simple, requiring just six eggs, sugar, heavy cream, milk, alcohol, and nutmeg for garnish. Since it is not cooked, it is important to use the freshest eggs available.
This recipe is a two-day process with most of the work done the day before serving. The egg yolks, sugar, milk, cream and alcohol are mixed together to allow the flavors to blend overnight. The egg whites are then beaten and folded in just before serving to create a light, airy texture.
If you’re looking to spice things up, Martha has other eggnog recipes, including a mint punch, coconut punch, and coffee punch. Find Martha’s recipes here. Eggnog is traditionally served as punch, either cold or at room temperature. Alternatively, it can be gently warmed and enjoyed as a comforting, comforting drink.

Beyond her culinary expertise, Martha dedicates a lot of time to turning her sprawling 153-acre property into a stunning vacation paradise. Each year, she decorates one to three trees in each room of her home, using a curated mix of antique and modern ornaments that she has lovingly collected over time.
“My windows and doors are always adorned with garlands and wreaths inside and out,” she said in the December 2016 issue of Martha Stewart living.
In one memorable year, the television personality elevated her holiday decor by purchasing more than 40 evergreen wreaths to beautify the windows of her home and the eaves of her outbuildings. He added a whimsical touch by placing shooting stars on the roofs and sides of the structures, transforming the property into a dazzling display of Christmas magic.
