Southampton on the hunt for a new manager after Russell Martin’s sacking

Southampton have parted ways with manager Russell Martin following their 5-0 defeat to Tottenham, which left the club nine points adrift of safety in the Premier League.

The 38-year-old had successfully led the Saints back to the Premier League last season, achieving promotion with a memorable play-off final victory over Leeds at Wembley.

However, this campaign has been a stark contrast, with Southampton going through a torrid spell, losing 13 of their 16 league games so far.

The team’s only league win this season came against Everton in November, and they have struggled to find the net, managing just 11 goals, the lowest in the division.

In a statement, Southampton said: “Going into the season, we all knew the challenges we would face this year as we readjusted to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world.

“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board has been supportive of Russell and his staff and has been open and transparent about our expectations.

We can confirm that we have made the difficult decision to part ways with our Men’s First Team Manager, Russell Martin.

Simon Rusk, the club’s under-21 coach, has been appointed interim head coach and will oversee the senior team starting with the Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.

Martin’s departure coincides with another Premier League managerial departure, as Wolves also announced the sacking of Gary O’Neil on the same day.

Southampton’s problems in the top flight this season have highlighted difficulties adapting to life in the Premier League, and the club will now look for a new direction to revive their survival hopes.
