Pornography website PornHub adds Florida to its list of states it will block starting next year. reported that Floridians who visited the porn website recently were greeted with a warning saying “You will lose access to PornHub in 14 days” thanks to a new state law that requires an ID to visit the website.
PornHub has already blocked several states from accessing its wealth of sexually explicit content due to new state laws requiring visitors to provide a valid government ID to verify their access age. The Florida legislature approved and Governor Ron DeSantis signed it into law on March 25 as part of a series of regulations aimed at protecting minors from explicit materials. Florida will become the 13th state to institute an age verification law for adult websites. After Florida, Arkansas, Virginia and Mississippi, all have ID verification laws on their books.
“Not only does this affect the rights of adults to access protected expression, but it fails to provide strict scrutiny by employing the least effective and yet also the most restrictive means to achieve the stated purpose (of the State) of supposedly protecting to minors”, according to
PornHub’s blog also states that the company is concerned about the safety and well-being of children, but the idea of using identification creates more risks for the safety and privacy of users. Louisiana law in particular does not have a state regulator to oversee implementation of the new laws “resulting in a flawed enforcement regime,” PornHub’s blog states.
