Philippine Civil Aviation Authority to Use Aireon Data for Air Traffic Surveillance By Investing.com

MCLEAN, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has taken a major step forward in safety and operational efficiency with the adoption of Aireon space air traffic surveillance data.

Under an agreement signed today, CAAP will deploy Aireon’s space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) data to monitor and separate aircraft in Manila’s busy Flight Information Region (FIR).

The Manila FIR, one of the largest in the region at almost three million square kilometers, has seen a significant increase in regional and foreign traffic. Adopting Aireon surveillance data will allow air traffic controllers to have unparalleled visibility into air traffic, which is particularly important over the ocean and in remote regions.

Aireon’s spatial ADS-B data holds great promise for CAAP to improve efficiency, increase safety, and improve environmental sustainability. “At Aireon, we look forward to partnering with CAAP and supporting their security objectives,” said Peter Cabooter, Executive Vice President of Customer Affairs at Aireon.

With this important step forward, the Philippines now joins other regional aviation leaders such as Hong Kong, Singapore and India in choosing to increase efficiency, improve safety and improve sustainability with Aireon data. CAAP Director General Captain Manuel Antonio Tamayo highlighted the importance of the partnership and emphasized that the adoption of the system will substantially improve the Philippines’ air traffic management capabilities.

“The integration of Aireon’s space-based ADS-B technology marks a transformative step for Philippine aviation. It allows us to maintain the highest levels of safety while meeting the growing demand for air travel in our region,” he added.
