Former world champions Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld led tributes to Wayne Mardle’s family following the death of his wife Donna ahead of the World Darts Championship.
Donna Mardle died earlier this week aged 52, following a short illness, and Sky Sports Darts announced her passing during coverage of the opening day of this year’s contest at Alexandra Palace.
“Wayne is the heart and soul of everything we do here at Sky Sports Darts, but the heart of his world, his wonderful wife Donna, sadly passed away earlier this week after a short illness,” said presenter Emma Paton during coverage.
“We will remember Donna throughout this tournament. Wayne, you are in our thoughts, you are in our hearts, we love you very much and we will see you very soon.”
The PDC issued a brief statement after his death was announced, saying: “All our thoughts and condolences are with Wayne Mardle and his family, following the passing of his wife Donna earlier this week.”
The speed world was quick to send their condolences on social media, with players (past and present) and fans sending wishes of support to Mardle and his family.
Taylor, a 16-time world champion, said on X: “Very sad to hear of the passing of Donna Mardle. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.”
Five-time world champion Van Barneveld added: “Very shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Donna Mardle tonight. Sending my condolences and thoughts to you @Wayne501Mardle and your family.”
Former BDO World Champion Stephen Bunting, also part of this year’s line-up, posted: “My thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with Wayne and his family following the sad loss of his beloved wife and best friend Donna.”
Steve Beaton, who ended a run of 33 consecutive appearances at the World Darts Championship when he failed to qualify, said: “Life’s too short. Love you mate.”
