Calls from mysterious numbers can be a hassle, especially if you’re trying to dodge scams or avoid talking to someone you can’t immediately identify. But there are two different ways to tag those unspecified numbers on your iPhone: No Caller ID and Unknown Caller. So what’s the difference?
Here’s what you should know about each label and how to stay safe from potential caller scams.
No Caller ID vs Unknown Callers
A call labeled “No caller ID” means that the caller has blocked your number from appearing on their screen. In other words, they want to keep your identity secret. This may be a privacy measure, but it is also a tool used by scammers, if not You can do it quickly. Check who the caller is based on their number, it may be easier to fall into their trap.
“Unknown call“,” on the other hand, is the message that appears when your telephone service provider does not recognize who is calling. This may be due to several factors, including technical or network issues, or receiving calls from foreign numbers. Often, these callers are not intentionally trying to hide their identity, but it is still a good idea to be careful. Scammers can also use this method to hide their identity by using, for example, a phone that is not registered with the phone company.
What to do if you receive anonymous calls
You should always proceed with caution if you cannot identify the caller. This is especially important if someone calls you and shows “No Caller ID” on the screen, since they have intentionally kept their number hidden. But an unknown caller is also something to be wary of, as it becomes more difficult to actually identify who is on the other end of the line.
Letting the call go to voicemail is usually a good idea. Simply answering a call is a signal to scammers that your number is active, which could lead to more similar calls in the future. The Live Voicemail feature is particularly useful for these situations because it allows you to answer the call if the voicemail transcript indicates that it is someone you want to speak to.
Silence unknown calls on your iPhone
You can even go a step further and mute unknown people on your iPhone. That way, those mysterious callers won’t bother you and can simply leave you a voicemail to review later.
On your iPhone, go to Settingsand then play Applications followed by Phone and go to Silence unknown calls. Press the switch to turn it on.

Use apps to block unidentified calls
Although there is no way to block these anonymous calls within your iPhone settings, your wireless service provider may offer apps to help with this.
AT&T ActiveArmorFor example, it has a free version that blocks spam and scam calls, and also allows you to block all unknown calls. The advanced version, which costs $4 a month, includes tools like reverse number lookup and caller ID for unknown numbers. ActiveArmor is available for iOS and Android.
Verizon’s Call Filter app also offers spam detection, a spam filter, and the option to report numbers, all for free. For an extra $4 a month, you’ll also get caller ID, spam scanning, a personal block list, and a spam risk meter. Call Filter is automatically enabled for Android users with a postpaid plan and is available in the app store for iPhone.
T-Mobile Scam Shield has a free option that includes full caller ID, scam reporting, and scam blocking. There’s also a premium option for $4 per month per line, which offers reverse phone number lookup and voicemail transcripts automatically sent to you via text message. You can download the Scam Shield app on the App Store either GooglePlay.
Be sure to check with other wireless service providers to see if they offer something similar. Some wireless carrier plans may also include access to premium features.
