A plane crash on the property of Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins on Thursday left one person dead, New York officials said.
Buffalo Niagara International Airport issued an alert around 11:16 a.m. ET that the plane was having mechanical problems as it attempted to reach White Plains, East Aurora Police Chief Patrick Welch said. The plane came from Lansing, Michigan.
About six minutes later, East Aurora dispatch received a phone call about a small plane crash in a wooded area, he added.

The plane crashed between two properties and “very close” to Dawkins’ home, Welch said. WKBW-TV reported that it was owned by Dawkins, citing property records.
The offensive lineman was excused from practice for personal reasons.
Welch said firefighters responding to the crash reported a “full fire” upon arrival.

The pilot, who was the only person aboard the 1979 Beechcraft A36, died, authorities said, but was not immediately identified.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it would investigate the crash.
Dawkins, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, spoke about the accident when he returned to practice.
“I still wonder why things happen in life, but tragedies happen all the time. The most important thing is that I hope the pilot’s family is okay. I hope they are okay because someone lost their life today in an accident.” accident,” he said, via Syracuse.com. “I’m glad my family is perfectly fine.”
