Napoli took advantage of AC Milan’s slip-up to move top of Serie A with a 3-1 victory over Inter Milan.
Milan drew 2-2 at Pisa on Saturday, and the defending champions made no mistake in defeating the team they won the Scudetto against last season to go top.
Surprisingly thrashed 6-2 by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Tuesday, Napoli took the lead through a Kevin De Bruyne penalty in the 33rd minute after Henrikh Mkhitaryan brought down Giovanni Di Lorenzo, although De Bruyne injured his hamstring in the act of breaking the deadlock.
McTominay puts Napoli two up in style
Scott McTominay surprisingly doubled their lead with a magnificent volley from the edge of the area just over eight minutes into the second half.
Hakan Calhanoglu halved the lead from the penalty spot, but André-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s individual effort in the 66th minute settled the game for Antonio Conte’s team.
Napoli are one point ahead of Milan, with Inter three behind the new leaders.

Hakimi returns PSG to the top
Achraf Hakimi was the star of Paris Saint-Germain who returned to the top of Ligue 1 with a 3-0 victory in Brest.
The winger scored two goals in 10 minutes to give PSG a 2-0 lead. He opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a first shot after a precise lofted pass from Vitinha, before converting from a tight angle after connecting well with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Lee Kang-in’s handball in the box gave Brest a lifeline from the spot, but Romain del Castillo slipped while taking the penalty and deflected his shot horribly high and wide.
Desire Doue completed the victory in the 96th minute, with PSG leapfrogging Marseille in the table as their arch-rivals slipped up in Lens.
Mason Greenwood put Marseille ahead in the 17th minute, but an effort from Odsonne Edouard and an own goal from Benjamin Pavard gave Lens a victory that sends them second.
Monaco beat Toulouse 1-0 and finished fourth, one point behind Marseille.
Bayern defeats Gladbach with 10 men
Bayern Munich remained five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, beating bottom-placed Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0.
Gladbach were left with 10 men when Jens Castrop was sent off for a reckless challenge on Luis Díaz in the 19th minute.
It took Bayern until the 64th minute to break the deadlock thanks to Joshua Kimmich, and five minutes later Raphael Guerreiro scored to double the lead.
Kevin Stöger hit a penalty against the post and wasted a golden opportunity to reduce Gladbach’s deficit, and nine minutes from the end of normal time the match was beyond doubt when teenager Lennart Karl became Bayern’s third-youngest goalscorer in the Bundesliga.
The 17-year-old scored in the Champions League in midweek and scored from long range as Bayern maintained their 100 per cent record in all competitions this season.
RB Leipzig remain Bayern’s closest challengers after winning 6-0 in Augsburg, while Borussia Dortmund needed a 96th-minute goal from Maximilian Beier to beat Cologne 1-0.

Villarreal wins the derby
Third-placed Villarreal earned derby bragging rights over Valencia with a 2-0 victory at Mestalla.
Gerard Moreno, who was playing his 300th game for the club, put the Yellow Submarine ahead by converting a deserved penalty in the 45th minute.
A goal from Santi Comesana in the 57th minute doubled the lead, and 15th-placed Valencia could not find a way to come back.
Elsewhere in LaLiga, Espanyol finished fourth with a 1-0 win over Elche, while Athletic Bilbao lost at home to Getafe by the same score.
Girona and Real Oviedo starred in a six-goal thriller in Catalonia.
A penalty from Federico Viñas and a goal from Salomón Rondón had Oviedo in control, but two penalties from Cristhian Stuani, either side of Azzedine Ounahi’s equalizer, seemed to have secured the points for Girona.
Stuani’s second penalty came in the 91st minute but, seven minutes later, David Carmo tied it 3-3 with a penalty.
