During The masked singerIn the season 12 finale, the Buffalos, now known as Boyz II Men, succeeded where no group had before, becoming the first band to win the Golden Mask trophy, but they didn’t initially have victory in mind.
“For the umpteenth time they called us… and we decided that we were going to do it” Wanya Morris exclusively said Us weekly before the final on Wednesday, December 18. “Because they called us a couple of times and we couldn’t do it. So last time we said, ‘Okay, let’s get this over with so they never call us again.'”
Wanyá, 51, and his bandmates, Natalia Morris (unrelated) and Shawn StockmanThey thought doing the show would be “good exposure,” but they didn’t imagine they would be able to take home the top honor. The masked singer has a history of eliminating major performers during season premieres, and the guys thought that might be their destiny.
“(We thought), ‘We probably won’t win because they’ll know who we are.’ Either they’ll trick us or, if we mask our voices, we know they won’t like who we are and they’ll kick us out,’” Wanyá recalled before Nathan, 53, chimed in: “We were hoping they kicked us out the first night so we could go home !
However, after they started filming, they changed their tune. “Once we got there and saw the energy and felt the whole vibe, we were like, ‘Look, man, as long as we’re here, we might as well stay,’” Wanyá said. Us. “And win. And then go!
Shawn, 52, admitted that the trio “wasn’t expecting much from this experience,” but they soon “really got into” performing as the Buffalos.
“It allowed us to be ourselves, believe it or not,” he explained. “The masks allowed us to reveal things about who we are as singers, who we are as people, music lovers, because a lot of people wouldn’t connect Boyz II Men with Toto or other songs that we did on the show, so it was nice for people to cast a look at our playlist, songs and music we love from artists we’ve enjoyed since we were kids in some cases. So it was nice and it became deeper than just winning it all.”
The boys even drowned on stage during the final, which Wanyá attributed to the unusual circumstances of competing in The masked singer as well as the realization that filming the show had brought them closer.
“What excited us most was the fact that we had overcome a situation that most people would walk away from. It was very hot with those suits and we didn’t know if we were going to be able to perform performances like (the final) from the beginning,” he explained. “It just felt like we were a new group to me. And we were being accepted as good singers, as good performers, and we weren’t even really human. … We were all the Buffalo, you know what I mean? Although we are individuals, we all embody that same character and we overcome every obstacle, dehydration, we overcome anxiety. “We overcome everything and sing with all our hearts for the people.”
Shawn agreed, adding, “It just made us realize that we still have the energy that we’ve always had (since) 33 years ago. Sometimes in any relationship, you tend to take for granted the dynamic you’ve built, and this made us refocus. “It made us remember why we did this in the first place.”
Boyz II Men have no plans to slow down in the new year, with tour dates booked through July.
“A lot of people use the word ‘relevant’ in their own terms and we feel like we’re relevant to each other, and that’s more important to us than anything else,” Nathan said. “And as long as we remain relevant to each other, we can follow what everyone else is doing. And we have many things ahead of us.”
