Since Kevin Feige confirmed that the MCU was receiving a restart (or, in his words, a “restart”) later Avengers: secret warsFans have been asking if Marvel is simply renouncing his famous cinematographic universe and starting again because they have run out of stories to tell. While that may be true, it is nothing new: the strong truth is that Marvel is in a creative routine that has lasted a quarter of a century. And everything goes back to the Ultimates comics line that simultaneously helped launch the MCU and predicted its fatality.
In 2000, Marvel’s chief editor Joe Quesada decided that Marvel’s continuity had inflated and complex to attract new readers. He decided to fix this by launching a new line of comics with his own continuity. This line ends (composed of titles such as Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Menand Ultimate Fantastic Four) Allowed Hotshot writers like Bryan Michael Bendis and Mark Millar to create Hollywood Comics Comics in a new continuity to sympathization that was more attractive to comics’ rookies.
From page to screen
The Ultimates line was a great success. The problems were sold as hotcaks, and these comics inspired Marvel’s first films.
For example, the X-Men X-Men films were borrowed from these comics: the attack on the X-Men mansion in X2 was inspired by a similar attack on Ultimate X-Menand Magneto’s attack on Washington, DC (complete with reprogrammed sentinels) in Future past days Wine of these iconic problems. Finally, all this creative impulse led to the Ultimates line more or less pave the path for the successful Marvel film universe.
Finally, Marvel created The UltimatesThat was a new version of the Avengers. This comic introduced several elements that MCU would steal in the whoever, including the manufacture of Hawkeye and Black Widow Shield agents and that Hulk would get its powers of a failed attempt to recreate the super soldier serum. These comics also presented Chitauri (the alien invaders who fought our heroes the Avengers) and introduced a black version of Nick Fury Drown exactly like Samuel L. Jackson.
There is no doubt that the Ultimates comic line influenced the MCU, until Tony Stark is a mentor of a teenage man. But what does all this have to do with Marvel caught in a creative routine? Finally, the Ultimates line became a swollen disaster that lay down under the weight of its own entangled continuity, and after one of the worst comics never (the less it was said about UltimatumThe better), this continuity was after mercy in 2015.
An entire universe dies
In other words, Marvel tried to solve the problems of his original comic universe with a creative restart. But after 15 years of increasingly diminished yields, he finally had to give up the Ultimates line. This continuity was finally killed in a comic event of 2015 called (Drumroll, please!) Secret Wars.
The MCU owes its existence to the Ultimates comics on a quantum level (which should not be confused with the quantum kingdom). Even so, those comics finally collapsed under their own narrative weight when writers ran out of good stories. The MCU follows the steps of those comics, giving us a series of revolutionary superheroes films that finally became so strange and confusing that Disney even decided that they needed a restart. And in a little cosmic serendipia, the MCU will restart after an adaptation of the same event that killed the comics that was inspired so much in.
The cylons were right
In summary, the cylons of the Battlestar Galactica The restart could also have been talking about Marvel when they said: “All this has happened before, and everything will happen again.” Comic readers for a long time have already seen the line of Ultimates revolutionize the comic history before that universe came to an end. But nothing in the comics remains dead, and later writers have returned the universe of Ultimates, although with some important changes (such as Peter Parker suddenly again being alive).
After Avengers: secret warsWe will see the restart of MCU, which simultaneously closes this beloved continuity while making important changes (including the recast of iconic characters such as Iron Man). Kevin Feige and Disney obviously expect this to provide a creative shot in the arm to their writers, while actually makes the public finally worry about the MCU again.
Honestly, it is difficult to worry about a company trapped in the same creative routine for 25 years, especially when we all know that it is only a matter of time before this universe of “restart” obtains its own reset without ceremonies, starting the cycle for other fourth century or two.
