Russia has launched an American detention teacher in a movement that the White House described as a sample of “good faith” that would help conversations to end war in Ukraine.
Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, flew to Moscow on his private plane on Tuesday to negotiate the agreement and ensure the return of Marc Fogel, who has been arrested in Russia since 2021.
Once the Witkoff plane had left Russian airspace, the United States national security advisor Mike Waltz, issued a statement confirming that Fogel would return to the American land “tonight.”
“President Trump, Steve Witkoff and President’s advisors negotiated an exchange that serves as a good faith of the Russians and a sign that we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine” Said Waltz.
A plane connected to Witkoff had landed in Moscow on Tuesday on Tuesday, calling attention to the secret agreement that was only announced, since it left Russian airspace in the afternoon.
It was not clear what the United States promised to Kremlin in exchange for Fogel’s release, and the White House did not provide more details.
His family said they were “more than grateful, relieved and overwhelmed” for their release, and praised the “unwavering leadership” of Trump.
The American legal team of Fogel said that his release occurred “after years of bureaucratic inaction, including the negatives consisting of designating Marc as unjustly detained.”
His Russian legal team said that Fogel’s liberation “encourages hope for the improvement of bilateral relations between the United States and Russia.”
Fogel was arrested for charges of bringing medicinal marijuana to the country in August 2021. He began to comply with a 14 -year sentence for charges in 2022. The administration of Joe Biden classified him as unfairly detained at the end of December.
The plane, which took off from Dulles Airport at 5.40 pm on Monday, is registered in a company linked to Witkoff, a multimillion -dollar real estate developer that Trump designated to be its special envoy. The plane’s transpondor reported a position near Moscow about eight hours later, at approximately 10 am local time.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday night that “he was already prepared for meetings with representatives of the United States.”
Trump said on his social platform truth on Tuesday that he would send his Treasury Secretary Scott Besent to Ukraine to discuss US access to natural resources and put an end to war between Russia and Ukraine.
Besent’s trip would mark the first in kyiv by a member of the Trump cabinet since the president assumed the position last month.
“This war should and end soon, too much death and destruction,” Trump said.
