James Milner claims the shirt No.20 in Brighton in tribute to Diogo Jota

James Milner has chosen to change to Brighton’s shirt No. 20 for the new season as a personal tribute to his former Liverpool teammate, Diogo Jota, who tragically died last month.

The 28 -year -old Portugal International died in a car accident in June along with his brother, Andre Silva, only a few weeks after helping Liverpool to ensure the premier League title.

In response to his death, Liverpool confirmed that the iconic Jota T -shirt, used during his five -year spell in Anfield, would be permanently removed.

Three of those seasons passed them with Milner before the experienced English midfielder departed towards Brighton in 2023.

Before the 2025-26 campaign, Brighton’s teammate, Carlos Baleba, decided to take shirt No. 17, leaving 20 available.

Milner, who has previously used No. 6 since he reached the south coast, saw him as an opportunity to make a gesture of respect.

“Once I heard that Carlos sought to change his number and 20 was available, wanted to do it as a respect brand and pay tribute to Diogo Jota,” Milner said in a message posted in Brighton’s X.

“He was an incredible player with whom I was lucky to play and also a great friend.

“It will be a great honor to use its number in the Premier League this year.”

The veteran midfielder, whose contract was renewed by Brighton in June and now extends beyond his 40th birthday, was one of several teammates who traveled to Portugal in July to attend Jota’s funeral.

Jota’s death has left a lasting brand in the world of football, which caused multiple taxes. #

Liverpool has already revealed plans to erect a commemorative statue of the striker in Anfield, while the wolves have included it in their hall of fame.

Clubs and fans throughout the country have also presented their respects with moments of silence and commemorative banners.
