James Gunn’s DC universe continues to adapt the most fun justice league in history

The latest DC Studios television revealed project is a television program “Booster Gold” by David Jenkins (creator of “Our Flag Media Death”), which has been ordered to pilot in HBO Max (By deadline). Booster Gold (created by Dan Jurgens in 1986), also known as Jon Michael Carter, is a superhero who travels in the future time. Although it comes from the 25th century, its history is familiar: it is an athlete who reached its maximum point in high school (being caught in the game in your own games will do that to you). Then, he travels in time with the hope of becoming a great fish in a smaller pond.

Although Booster is dense and a self -promoter glory, it is not a bad guy. It is similar to the version of James Gunn by Peter Quill/Star-Lord, so he should naturally fit into the new DC universe of Gunn if his pilot progresses. “Booster Gold” is not the only DCU television program in process either.

DC Studios has made an animated series based on the character Mister Miracle, and the live action series “Lanterns” arrives in HBO in early 2026. The latter will feature the Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), which previously appeared in “Superman”. Guy is part of the “Pandilla de Justicia”, a group of heroes funded by Rico Lord Max (Sean Gunn). The gang is likely to receive a brand change to the Justice League … specifically, I bet on the Justice League InternationalThe team created in 1987 by the writers JM Dematteis and Keith Giffen and the artist Kevin Maguire.

The alignment of the JLI was fluid, but the essential characters included Max Lord (who brought together the team in his role as the United Nations agent), Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Fire & Ice, Guy Gardner, Mister Miracle and his wife Big Barda, Black Canary, Batman and Martian Manhunter (the last two were the heterosexual men of the team). When we put our first glance to Guy Gardner of Fillion on the “Superman” trailer last December, I wrote how Gunn using Guy and Max Lord suggested that he is moving away from “Justice League International”. Booster Gold and Mister Miracle entering the DCU adds evidence to the pile. Then he does Gunn directly saying Kevin Maguire’s work has influenced the DCU.

What distinguishes the JLI from other leagues? “Justice League International” has It has been described as a more work comedy about superheroes that a typical series of adventures, and bowed to humor more and more as it advanced. Knowing what Gunn Ama of the superheroes, reading the comics of the “Justice League International” could provide an idea of his plans for the DCU.

“The initial alignment was issued by DC Editorial. We had no voice at all. At all it worked for our benefit that, for the most part, we obtained a group of characters that were seen as the second triango, because that gave us a license to make them ours. To print them with our unique POV.”

The result was an electric (and eccentric) set of characters that did not get along. The Batman and the Black feminist canary of Batman and the Black feminist canary against the pig with Toro Gardner. Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, both mischievous misguided discarded to a large extent by their teammates, form a dynamic duo of strivers. (OnceThey even opened a casino together … and failed miserably).

If there is any comics writer that James Gunn echo, it is giffen and dematteis writing the Justice League. Does Dematte’s appointment about making the characters of “Second Stringer” in his own? Gunn did that in Marvel with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Contemporary “Guardians” comics were a more serious spatial opera on a lot of war veterans who tried to maintain peace. Gunn turned that story, and his dark main characters, into an unusual action comedy but emotionally honest about holes A and the rare who find his place together. The result? The Guardians of the Galaxy are now on the list of Marvel Comics A list.

Like the comics after the crisis in the late 1980s, Gunn’s DCU leaves an earlier ending of the DC universe. Giffen, Dematteis and Maguire adopted a new tone as a rejuvenation of stories narration, and Gunn follows his steps.
