In-person shopping returns amid record-breaking holiday spending season

Shoppers are ready to spend some cash this holiday season, as total spending this year is expected to be at least $24 billion more than last year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Online shopping remains the biggest hit, but in-person shopping is making a comeback and the NRF predicts that nearly half of all shoppers will head to department stores and discount stores to complete their shopping lists.

Store owners at the Galleria at Sunset in Henderson, Nevada, said it gets busier every year.

“Black Friday was fantastic. We met the goal. We actually passed the goal, so it was good. It’s better than last year. So it was good for us. Everyone likes to try things too. So I think that It’s what keeps malls open,” said Bring it Back owner Brandon Nova.

Some Galleria at Sunset locations are seeing a rush of visitors, especially during the holiday season. Store owners and employees said customers want that in-person experience.

The mall’s general manager said it hasn’t been this busy since the pandemic.

“I would say since COVID, it’s been the first holiday season where… we felt the Christmas spirit. Customers, you can feel like they’re happy to be shopping, happy to be outside, you know, experiencing the holiday season.” said Heather Cox, general manager of the Galleria at Sunset.

According to the NRF, there has been a big uptick in in-person shopping over the past four years as consumers begin to enjoy the social aspect of going to the mall again.

“We, as consumers, don’t buy just because we need something,” said Mark Mathews, executive director of research at NRF. “One of the main reasons people go out is to look for deals, but also to be with family and friends, to participate, and to be a fun activity. And for a lot of people, shopping is a fun activity. So, you know , me “I don’t think we’ll ever see the end of in-store shopping.”
