Leeds United’s decision to allow Junior Firpo’s contract to run out has been described as “staggering” by Jon Newsome.
Firpo has become a key player for Leeds since arriving from Barcelona in 2021, contributing three goals and 15 assists in 100 appearances in all competitions.
This season alone, the winger has scored one goal and provided three assists in 15 championship games.
However, his current contract at Elland Road is set to expire at the end of this season, and no new deal appears close.
Firpo himself cast doubt on his future in November when he admitted he “has options” to move away from Leeds United.
“Football is like that. One day you’re here, another day you’re there. But this is the topic I have been discussing with myself since we were relegated,” said the 28-year-old. “Obviously I could have done the same (as others who left), I could have left.
“I have my options, I think everyone knows it, it’s not something I can hide. I had my options and I could leave, but as you say, my family is based here. “We are doing very well right now, but we don’t know what the future will bring.”
That such an important player’s contract has been allowed to be so low will be a huge source of frustration for Leeds fans.
Former Whites defender Newsome has described the situation as “amazing”, highlighting both the quality on the pitch and the transfer value that Firpo brings.
“Honestly, I’m absolutely shocked that the football club would allow any player to enter the final year of their contract,” the BBC pundit said (via Leeds ITV News).
“Even if in the summer things change, the club gets promoted to the Premier League, is he a Premier League footballer, is he one you want to keep?
“If the club doesn’t get promoted and financial constraints mean his salary is too high, at least you can get rid of him for money, which I think is absolutely amazing.”
