A shooter ambush the firefighters who responded to a fire in a Idaho mountain community on Sunday, killing at least two people and unleashing the shooting bombings for several hours in an attack that the governor described an “atrocious” assault.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s office said the teams responded to a fire in Canfield Mountain at approximately 1:30 pm, and shots were reported approximately half an hour later.
Sheriff Bob Norris told journalists that officials did not know if someone else was shot.
“We don’t know how many suspects there are there, and we don’t know how many victims are there,” said Norris. “We are actively taking a sniper while we talk.”
People still leave the mountain, said the Sheriff, so “it would be safe to assume” that others are still there.
Idaho Governor Brad Little said the “multiple” firefighters were attacked.
“This is an atrocious direct assault on our brave firefighters,” Little said on the social media platform X. “I ask all Idaho.
The Sheriff’s office in Soshone County said on Facebook that the authorities were “dealing with an active shooter situation in which the shooter is still free.”
An alert of the Kootenai County Emergency Management Office asked people to avoid the area around the Canfield and Nettleton Gulch Road mountain path, about 6.5 kilometers north of the center of Coeur D’Alene.
The fire was still active, Norris said.
“He will keep burning,” he said. “I can’t put any appeal right now.”

Coeur d’Airne is a city of 55,000 residents near the border with the state of Washington. Canfield Mountain is a popular hiking and cycling area on the outskirts of the city of Norte de Idaho, covered with trees and heavy brushes with paths.
