Starring in the “Big Bang Theory” prequel series, “Young Sheldon,” had the potential to be a daunting task for Iain Armitage. After all, Jim Parsons’ character on “The Big Bang Theory,” Sheldon Cooper, is one of the most well-known and popular contemporary sitcom characters, so playing a younger version of him comes with its own set of challenges.
Fortunately, the young actor received expert advice from the person who knew the role best: Parsons himself, who served as the show’s narrator in addition to being one of its executive producers. In April 2024, before the premiere of the final episode of the series “Memoir,” Armitage said Variety about the help Parsons was able to provide:
“Mostly just teaching me how to do the accent and the way Sheldon looks at the world. Saying that Sheldon seeks order and has difficulty with social interaction, how it can be kind of messy. For Sheldon, as amazing and cool as He is , it’s not that easy for him. He can do all these wonderful things and he has an incredible brain, but some feelings towards him can be completely strange. It’s a pretty fascinating and interesting juxtaposition for both characters and a person.
Jim Parsons had good things to say about young Sheldon…eventually
Although he participated in the “Big Bang Theory” prequel series and took the time to help Iain Armitage inhabit the role of Sheldon Cooper to great effect, Jim Parsons almost rejected “Young Sheldon” at first. This didn’t work out, however, as the quality of the project ended up winning Parsons over enough that he even made a cameo during the series finale, playing an older, more mature Sheldon with a new look opposite his fellow veteran. from “Big Bang Theory.” Mayim Bialik as Amy Farrah Fowler, Sheldon’s wife.
As you can imagine, Armitage found the opportunity to see Parsons return to the role they both played for so long fascinating, to say the least. In the Variety interview, he revealed how he felt watching Parsons play Sheldon:
“It was definitely surreal. I think it was weird and cool and interesting. He said in a good way, he felt like a guest on our set. I was glad it didn’t feel too strange or out of the ordinary for him. That’s all what I can ask for.”
Currently, the entirety of “Young Sheldon” is streaming on Max (along with all seasons of “The Big Bang Theory”).
