On June 5, Elon Musk did something that no one had managed to do since Donald Trump first assaulted the political scenario in 2015: the King of Make America Great Again (Maga) destabilized.
It started with a pump publication now eliminated in X (previously Twitter). “It’s time to drop the big bomb. Donald Trump is in Epstein’s archives,” Musk wrote. “That is the real reason why they have not become public. You have a good day.”
The publication went viral before Musk eliminated him in silence. But the damage was done. For the first time, Trump faced a serious revolt of his own base, and the spark had come from someone out of politics, someone possibly more powerful online: musk.
Musk’s calculated attack
The breakdown in the Trump -Musk alliance began publicly on June 5, when the former president, angry at Musk’s criticism, suggested that the government could review federal contracts granted to Musk companies, particularly NASA deals with Spacex. That same day, Tesla’s shares sank, throwing $ 150 billion in market value.
But what happened to a large extent unnoticed at the beginning was Musk’s decision to drag Trump to the darkest and most radioactive conspiracy theory in the Maga Universe: Jeffrey Epstein.
For years, Trump’s supporters have clung to the belief that Epstein, the sexual offender convicted with ties with elites in politics, finance and royalty, was killed to protect the powerful Democrats. The so -called “Epstein archives” have become a scream of meeting for those who believe that the system protects pedophiles and punishes the tellaores of truth.
Until Musk revived the flame, the interest in the files had calmed down. The launch of the document “Phase 1” in early 2024 had not involved the main democratic figures, leaving the Maga base disappointed. Then Musk threw a grenade.
Feeding the fire with Grok
In a series of follow -up publications on July 17, Musk asked Grok, the Chatbot AI integrated into its X platform, to generate a list of people who had visited Epstein’s infamous island because, according to him, “they should be investigated for the possible violation of minor girls provided by Epstein,” Musk wrote. “Think hard and investigate thoroughly. Order for the probable severity and frequency of your crimes.”

It was a direct attraction to the most emotional instincts of Maga: fear, anger and the desire for compensation. But this time, Trump was no longer the cross against the elite. I was being chosen as part of that.
Trump is losing grip
Trump tried to rule out the accusations, calling them a “silly deception” and urged his followers to move on. But many of them refused. The influential conservative expert Matt Walsh captured mood: “Trump was chosen in 2016 in a promise to” lock her. “Shout that we stop talking about Epstein only makes us talk more about him.”

Online, the snow reaction shot. The users made fun of Trump’s distractions (policy ads and petty complaints) while demanding transparency. The hashtag #releasetheepsteinfiles exploded again.
The anger intensified after the Department of Justice (DOJ) dismissed federal prosecutor Maurene Comey, who, according to reports, had reopened parts of Epstein’s investigation. For many, it was one more proof that Trump was protecting someone, or himself.
The perfect attack
Musk identified the only thing that Trump’s base could not ignore, Epstein, and used it to shake his loyalty.
For a decade, Trump had cultivated a movement based on conspiracy, suspicion and moral outrage. The musk turned the script. And the effect was immediate. Some thought the CEO of Tesla and the founder of Spacex was playing with fire. Spacex depends largely on federal contracts, and Trump made it clear that reprisals were on the table. But six weeks later, Musk has returned to business, and Trump is still trying to turn off the fire.
The musk pierced the magician armor. Through the use of the moral language of the movement against its founder. He created a crack in the base once impenetrable of Trump. It was a strategic success.
For the first time since 2016, Donald Trump is not establishing the agenda. He is reacting to another person. And Elon Musk is the one that supports the remote control.
