Hamas releases three Israeli hostages as released Palestinian prisoners

“All prisoners who were released today need medical attention, treatment and exams as a result of the brutality to which they were subjected in recent months,” said Abdullah al-Zaghari of the group.

One of the launched was Jamal Al-Tawil, 61, a prominent politician from Hamas in the West Bank and former mayor of the village of Al-Bireh, who has spent more than 19 years inside and outside the Israeli prisons.

His daughter Bushra Al-Tawil was released in an earlier release of prisoners in January.

Both the father and the daughter were celebrated more recently, reported media.

Khadra Al-Daghma, the mother of another released Palestinian prisoner, described feeling “so happy, delighted” having seen his son for the first time in 15 years.

“My heart is full of happiness,” he told a journalist in Gaza, and added that his son, Ammar Fadel al-Daghma, had “changed a lot” and “was not the same.”

According to the Israeli prison service, he was arrested for crimes that include fire, attempted murder and service to an illegal organization.

Hamas confiscated 251 hostages and killed about 1,200 people when he attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, triggering the war.

According to the Hamas Ministry of Health, at least 47,500 Palestinians in Israel’s offensive. Around two thirds of Gaza’s buildings have been damaged or destroyed by Israel’s attacks, the UN says.

Eli Sharabi, 52, was taken from Kibbutz Beeri with his brother, Yossi, whose death has been confirmed. Eli’s British wife, Lianne, and two daughters, Noiya and Yahel, were killed in the attack.
