Manchester City administrator, Pep Guardiola, will wait until after the international break to settle in a number one goalkeeper, after a difficult home debut for James Trafford last week.
Trafford, signed from Burnley after City activated its repurchase clause for England international, maintained a clean blade in its debut in Wolves, but was to blame for Tottenham’s second goal last Saturday when Spurs claimed a 2-0 victory in the Etihad stadium.
After receiving a bad pass from Nico González, Trafford saw his effort to play the ball from the intercepted rear when Pape Sarr diverted him on the path of Richarlison, before Joao Palhinha finally triggered in a deviated strike.
Trafford was unstable from then on with Ederson, whom Guardiola had referred as his number one a week before, observing from the bank.
Ederson has been very linked to a transfer to Galatasaray, and it was reported that City is in conversations with Gianluigi Donnarumma by Paris Saint-Germain. At the same time, a possible movement of loans to Besiktas for Trafford has been speculated.
When asked about his goalkeeper situation before Sunday’s trip to Brighton and Hove Albion, Guardiola made it clear that he will wait before establishing himself in a hierarchical order.
“In this part of the previous season (the) International Transfer Window is closed, everything is possible. It is simple as that,” said Guardiola on his goalkeepers.
“After that, we are going to play League from United and Champions and Arsenal, after that, everything will be clearer and make a decision. It depends on the performance and depends on many reasons.”
Despite his mistake last weekend, Trafford was still appointed in the Thomas Tuchel England team for his next World Cup qualifiers, and Guardiola indicated that he has received a lot of support this week as City has focused on bouncing in Brighton.
“They always have their arms on their shoulders, always. They don’t believe it, but we take care of them. Impossible () It would be better,” Guardiola added.
“What happened does not belong only to James. It is not easy to say, but (no) does not belong only to James to change what happened in the second goal against the Spurs.
“He has a great personality. Of course he worries him, I would not like if he doesn’t worry, but, of course, we are here to help them.”
Pressing who would start in the goal in Brighton, Guardiola joked: “I will decide tomorrow. Because I don’t have a press conference tomorrow.”
