GM is giving up its Cruise robotaxi subsidiary. The company today that it will add Cruise to its own internal technical team. Under the new strategy, this single unit will focus for now on the development of advanced driver assistance programs and, in the future, on fully autonomous personal vehicles.
GM Cruise in 2016. However, the robotaxi brand faced intense scrutiny last year after a pedestrian in San Francisco drove past one of its self-driving cars. Subsequent investigations saw Cruise halt all operations by and for her, and several of the company’s leaders were in the aftermath. In recent months, Cruise had resumed some operations, but the blow to public trust and safety following the pedestrian incident appears to have created an insurmountable obstacle for GM.
