Real Madrid faces a short trip to its neighbor Getafe with the aim of responding to Barcelona’s victory over Girona and returning to the top of LaLiga.
Barcelona claimed a 2-1 victory over Girona thanks to Ronald Araujo’s added-time winner, the champions overtaking Madrid and back into top spot.
Madrid are expected to retake the lead in the title race at the Coliseum Stadium, although with several players out through injury, coach Xabi Alonso will have to be especially diligent with his team selection ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Juventus.
Los Blancos have only lost once in LaLiga under Alonso, and they quickly erased the memory of that 5-2 loss to Atlético Madrid with wins over Kairat in the Champions League and Villarreal in their final game before this month’s international break.
But Alonso is not taking the clash with Getafe lightly despite the expectation that they will maintain the momentum of those results.
“For me, the next block (of matches) is always the most difficult,” Alonso said in his pre-match press conference.
“In this we want to continue progressing, both in La Liga and in the Champions League. We want to be consistent and perform well.
“We are thinking about what is coming, which is Getafe. We are not looking further, although we are aware of what is coming. Until now we have been quite consistent and reliable, but we cannot be complacent; each rival is well prepared.”
Ferland Mendy, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dani Carvajal, Dean Huijsen and Antonio Rudiger are not available for selection due to injury for Madrid.
Kylian Mbappé is fit after missing the international break with a small ankle problem. Franco Mastantuono is also available after a muscle problem.
Adrián Liso will return to Getafe after the U-20 World Cup in which he participated with Spain.
Liso has three goals in five games this season and will be a key threat as Getafe aim to spring a surprise.
However, goalkeeper Jiri Letacek will miss by one hit.
Getafe: Soria; Dakonam, Abqar, Duarte; Femenia, Milla, Arambarri, Rico; Martin; Smooth, Mayoral.
Real Madrid: Courtois Valverde, militao, sensio, careers; Guler, Tchouameni, Bellingham; Mastantuonus, mbappé, viniicus.
Getafe-Real Madrid starts at 8pm UK time. It is available to watch on Premier Sports 1 and Premier Sports Player. It is also available through Amazon Prime Video (Premier Sports subscription required) and on LaLiga TV.
Madrid have been far from solid defensively this season, but they should still have too much quality for their hosts. There is nothing to suggest anything other than a routine away victory.
Prediction: Getafe 1-3 Real Madrid
