If you travel through space, you will need a ship. For now, the only ships we are able to build are slow, fat rockets that spew fire. Science fiction travels to space much faster.
While some stories are better when things move slowly, science fiction is often funnier when things move at breakneck speed. But which sci-fi spaceship is the fastest?
It depends on what you are asking. For example, a fighter ship is probably faster than a capital ship in normal space, but a capital ship capable of entering hyperspace is an easy winner. So, for the purposes of this list, we are measuring our ships solely based on how fast they can get from point A to point B.
These are the fastest spaceships in science fiction.
He LEXX It is a biomechanical spacecraft capable of traveling faster than light. LEXX moves through the universe using a biologically powered propulsion system. This organic drive allows the ship to travel across galaxies and even between universes at speeds that are never precisely quantified, but which have been shown to be far superior to most conventional spacecraft in their universe.
While it lacks the complex navigation systems typical of mechanical spacecraft, its biological design makes up for this with a natural affinity for movement through space. Their ability to cross intergalactic and interdimensional boundaries implies a highly advanced and possibly bizarre understanding of the space physics encoded in their organic systems.
Despite its unparalleled speed, LEXX often requires guidance from its crew to determine destinations, as it lacks the cognitive ability for strategic decision-making. The ship’s combination of organic propulsion and intuitive navigation positions the LEXX as one of the most extraordinary ships in science fiction, even if it is ugly.
He Andromeda Ascendant is a Glorious Heritage-class heavy cruiser designed as part of the High Guard fleet at Systems Commonwealth. With the fall of the Commonwealth, Andromeda is the only one of her species left.
Andromeda’s propulsion is based on Slipstream Drive, a technology that allows faster-than-light travel through a network of natural pathways called Slipstream routes. Unlike traditional FTL systems, slipstream navigation requires an intuitive pilot to plot courses through these unstable routes. Precise calculations are impossible due to the chaotic nature of vortex physics.
Andromeda’s AI must collaborate with human pilots to navigate this complex system effectively and quickly.
He Planet Express Ship is a state-of-the-art delivery spacecraft designed by the brilliant but eccentric Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth.
The ship is powered by a dark matter engine, which provides nearly infinite fuel efficiency and works by moving the universe around the ship rather than the ship moving through the universe. This unique propulsion system allows the Planet Express ship to effectively reach infinite speed relative to itself, allowing for instantaneous or near-instantaneous interstellar travel.
The ship’s engine runs on dark matter, a substance refined from the excrement of the Nibblonian species, making it as strange as it is efficient.
He Event horizonfrom the 1997 science fiction horror film of the same name, is an experimental spacecraft designed to test a revolutionary propulsion system known as Gravity Drive. This engine enables faster-than-light travel by creating an artificial black hole, folding space-time so that two points connect instantly.
The core of Gravity Drive employs exotic matter and advanced energy manipulation to generate a singularity, collapsing the distance between locations in space. In doing so, the Event Horizon does not travel in the traditional sense; instead, it “jumps” from one point to another, completely avoiding the space in between. The Gravity Drive is housed in a specialized and very creepy chamber at the back of the ship, surrounded by containment fields and reinforced structures to manage the extreme energy and gravitational forces it generates.
That all sounds great, except there is one horrible side effect. To get between two points, the Event Horizon must first go through what is basically hell. As you can imagine, that doesn’t go well.
Still, Event Horizon can get you to your destination very quickly. You’ll probably be crazy or dead when you get there.
He USS Discovery (NCC-1031) in Star Trek: Discovery It is one of two Crossfield-class starships built by Starfleet. Both were equipped with an experimental propulsion system called Spore Drive, but only the Discovery got it to work.
This experimental push uses the mycelial network, a subspace domain composed of a vast network of spores that spans the entire galaxy. Yes, he basically flies using space mushrooms.
The Spore Drive’s biologically enhanced system integrates an organic system similar to a supercomputer. interacts with a living navigator, most notably the Ripper or later tardigrade-like creature, Commander Paul Stamets, who uses injected spores to connect to the network. By tapping into this mycelial network, Discovery can instantly “jump” to any location in the universe, bypassing traditional warp speed limitations and enabling unparalleled tactical and exploratory capabilities.
The mechanics of the Spore Drive are based on advanced technobabble, where the ship essentially repositions itself through microscopic conduits in space-time rather than traversing the intervening space. While normal Star Trek warp drives rely on the manipulation of space-time through the matter-antimatter reaction and dilithium crystals, the Spore Drive operates completely outside of this paradigm, offering instantaneous travel without time dilation effects.
Guild ships in Dune They are colossal spaceships used by the Spacing Guild for instantaneous interstellar travel, a cornerstone of the Empire’s economy and government.
These ships employ space folding technology, made possible by the use of a psychoactive spice blend. This ability grants Guild Navigators the prophetic ability to chart safe paths through folded space. The process, known as spatial folding powered by Holtzman Drive, collapses large distances between two points, effectively eliminating travel time.
The guild ships are operated by mutated human Navigators who, after prolonged exposure to spices, develop superhuman cognitive abilities and physical deformities. These abilities allow them to perceive the complex and changing paths of folded space and avoid fatal collisions with celestial objects.
These immense cylindrical ships can carry entire fleets or large quantities of cargo, making them indispensable for commerce, war, and government.
TARDIS It means time and relative dimension in space. The Doctor’s Voyage made its maiden voyage long before the events we see on screen in Doctor Who. The incredibly ancient vehicle is a Type 40 Time Capsule built by the Time Lords on the planet Gallifrey.
The TARDIS is alive and incredibly intelligent. It exists in multiple dimensions simultaneously, which is why it is bigger on the inside. This multidimensional nature allows it to bypass the normal limitations of both time and space.
When the Doctor sets coordinates for a new location in time or space, the TARDIS dematerializes from its current location, travels through the “time vortex” and then rematerializes at the destination. The process is almost instantaneous. The time vortex can be thought of as a highway that instantly connects different points along the space-time continuum, regardless of their distance or temporal separation in the “normal” universe.
The space is big. You just won’t believe how huge, huge, mind-blowingly big it is. I mean, you may think there’s a long way to go to the pharmacy, but that’s just nonsense in space.
So if you’re going to travel through space, you’re going to need something fast. There is nothing faster than heart of gold. It’s probably number one on our list.
That’s because The Heart of Gold is powered by an infinite improbability engine, a wonderful new method of crossing vast distances in less than a second without all that tedious hyperspace nonsense.
The drive takes advantage of the natural chaos of the universe by passing through every conceivable point in every conceivable universe almost simultaneously. While typical sci-fi engines may struggle to bend the laws of physics, Infinite Improbability Drive throws them out the window and drinks tea with the resulting chaos. It’s unlikely, which is the point.
The origins of the Heart of Gold are as extraordinary and chaotic as the ship itself. The ship was designed and built on the planet Damogran, from where it was launched to great fanfare in a ceremony attended by the President of the Galaxy, Zaphod Beeblebrox. Unfortunately, in a totally improbable move, Zaphod stole the Heart of Gold and transported it to regions unknown.
Zaphod stole it because he knows what you know now. If you’re a Hoopy Frood who knows where his towel is, then there’s no faster way to travel the Universe than aboard the Heart of Gold.
