Eddie Howe would love that Alexander Isak stays in Newcastle, but admits that there are “things that happen behind the scene” with the striker reflecting on a Tyneside departure.
Isak is not with the rest of the team on the preseason trip to Asia with the club declaring that it was due to a minor injury in the thigh. However, shortly after Newcastle said that his star man was not fit, he arose reports that Isak was exploring a transfer far from the St James park.
Isak has been tracked by Liverpool in recent weeks, while it was also informed that it was a lucrative contract on the side of Saudi Al-Hilal Arabia.
Leave Howe in a complicated position and, as expected, the issue dominated her press conference before the friendly tomorrow against Arsenal in Singapore.
“There are things that happen behind the scene. He will know that he is in the news every day and I’m sure that is not easy for anyone,” he said.
“The conversations that occur between Alex and the Club or Alex and I will keep private. We share a really good relationship with him. He has been magnificent for us since he joined. It is very popular in the costumes and we would love to continue his trip in Newcastle.”
Newcastle fans have cried out why Isak receives a new agreement to persuade him to stay, but Howe admitted that he is not currently on the agenda.
“That will be for a later date,” he added with Isak still to have three years in his current agreement.
“With the situation as it is and the state of the window, in the sense that it rushes towards the end of the window very quickly from our perspective, there are still as many things that could happen.”
Howe insisted that Isak had a blow and had not only opted outside the trip, since the 4-0 beating last weekend had also been lost by Celtic.
He said: “With his injury, I don’t have a great update on that. He first mentioned his thigh just before the Celtic game and we assumed that it would be a very minimal injury, nothing too serious.
“Then, on Monday after the Celtic game, it was very early training, it did not feel good, so it is now in Newcastle getting that injury. Hopefully it will soon play with the black and white shirt. That is what we all want to see.”
