The deceased Gene Hackman starred in numerous films that are now considered classic. From “the conversation” to the “French connection”, “Unforgiven”, and everything that is among them, their filmography is full of projects that most of the actors would love to have in their curriculum, although Hackman believed that he was not the right man for some of his iconic roles. That said, even the most successful actors regret, and for Hackman, one of the main ones was to reject the opportunity to star in the “common people” of 1980.
Directed by Robert Redford and written by Alvin Sargent (adapting the 1976 novel of the same name as Judith Guest), “Ordinary People” tells the story of a rich family that is surpassed by pain after the death of one of his children. Donald Sutherland’s character, Calvin Jarrett, is the father in charge of trying to keep all together when his home begins to disintegrate after the tragedy, and the actor offers an emotionally moving performance that generated lots of critical acclamation.
“Ordinary People” was nominated for six academy awards and won four of them (including the Oscar of the best film), so it is understandable why Hackman wanted to have accepted the concert when he was offered. With that in mind, why did Did you reject the project first?
Gene Hackman rejected ordinary people for financial reasons
Gene Hackman was an actor in demand in the late 70s and early 80s, so he probably received tons of offers for attractive projects he rejected for any reason. However, while “ordinary people” attracted their gustatory papillae, he and the study could not see the eyes on the commercial side of things. As the actor explained to the Chicago Tribune In 1985:
“I liked the script, but I could not reach an agreement with respect to – how can I express it? – Compensation. If I thought, I supposed that I would have to regret it. So what you have to do is not think about that, don’t you think about it?”
“Ordinary People” is the project that escaped for the late actor, although there were also at least two films that Hackman regretted starring. This only shows that even the best artists who sometimes make mistakes. Even so, the great strength of Hackman’s general filmography is a proof that he leaves more successes than Misses.
