He Deep space nine The end of season 1 “In the hands of the prophets” without realizing it, he made the story of Star Trek to break with The next generation Tradition of cliffs that end the season. This helped split to establish its own identity, but an early idea for this episode would have spoiled The end by directing it directly to the adventures of the Enterprise-D. This is because DS9 producers played with the idea of making this end a TNG crossing in which Picard, Sisko and his two crews would have to fight a Cardasian invasion.
On paper, this would have given the first Deep space nine Final a connection with “Emissary”, the first episode that presented a memorable cameo of Captain Picard. However, Rick Berman decided to kill this crossing plan, which caused the then kidnapper Michael Piller to produce a different approach. “In the hands of the prophets” he shares the religious issues of “emissary”, but when he abandoned the plans of an ambitious TNG crossover, the controversial producer Berman may have accidentally saved this show in his first days by forcing DS9 to defend his own merits.
To understand why the original plans for this Deep space nine Finale would have been disastrous, you must take a closer look at the rest of the season 1. While there are some great episodes there (“Duet” was an early exhibition of the program’s potential), too much of the first DS9 was based on cameos of the TNG characters. In addition to making a cameo in “emissary” and the constant presence of thousands and Keiko O’Brien, the first season saw the return of the characters of TNG Lursa, B’etor, Q, Vash and Lwaxana Troi.
Other TNG characters would appear later in this spin -off, the most prominent among them Worf and their companions Klingon, Gowron. While these characters made great additions to Deep space nineThey also illustrate why this first final is a TNG crossover would have been disastrous. Such episode would have assured that DS9 would always be in the shadow of TNG, and the producers would have been forced to bring even more familiar characters and plot points to obtain the grades.
Now, hardcore TNG fans may not have important such Deep space nine Finale, especially if he assured more appearances of Captain Picard and other family characters. But the strong truth is that the originality of DS9 is its greatest strength, and until today, it is still the best Star Trek show because it is nothing more in the franchise. And if his first final caught all our attention as characters like Sisko so that Picard and the crew could have received even more attention, then DS9 would have withered in the vine as a failed spin -off that could never Do it on its own.
Star Trek: The next generation and Deep space nine Both are great shows, but they are completely different in tone, characterization, storytelling and much more. By ensuring that “in the hands of the prophets” it would not become a TNG crossover, Rick Berman gave this spin -off the opportunity to develop his own style and voice. Very soon, everyone knew what Sisko was trying to tell us when he hit P … he is No Picard, and both he and his program would be doing something completely different from anything we would have seen before.
