The Czech Republic fired coach Ivan Hasek following their humiliating 2-1 loss to the Faroe Islands in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
Czechia, which has not reached the World Cup finals since 2006, is second in Group L, three points behind Croatia having played one more match.
The Czech Republic has already secured a place in the play-off thanks to its qualification in the Nations League. However, a shock defeat to the Faroe Islands in Torshavn on Sunday left their hopes of automatic qualification hanging by a thread.
Croatia will face the Faroe Islands and Montenegro in their final two qualifying matches next month and are expected to prevail in both to book their place in the North American tournament.
Czechia will face Gibraltar in their final qualifying match, but would need a series of notable results to overtake Croatia, who have a much superior goal difference.
As such, the FACR has decided to end Hasek’s second spell as national team coach, which began in January 2024.
Hasek led the team at Euro 2024, but Czechia was eliminated in the group stage with just one point from three games.
An interim coach is expected to lead the team against Gibraltar. The UEFA play-offs will be held at the end of March.
