Two men have been accused after Ontario authorities investigated the suspicious activity of bets and gift card fraud.

Two men have been accused by the Office of Investigation and Compliance with the Provincial Police (OPP) of Ontario (IEB) in relation to the suspicious activity of sports bets and gaming of the Lottery and Gaming of Ontario. The investigation was caused when thousands of gift cards committed themselves in several gas bar locations in Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay.

IEB additional research revealed that fraud amounted to CAS $ 400,000 ($ 290,000 USD), where Gift cards were used to pay Proline bets. The two men would supposedly bet on both teams to guarantee a victory.

“Olg’s purchases and bets were made in the gas bars using the gift cards obtained from Fraudulent,” said OPP Corporate Communications Office spokeswoman Gosia Puzio, in an email seen by CTV News. “The gas bars and their employees did not know that the gift cards were fraudulent.

“The betting pattern was consistent with money laundering, where individuals place large bets on both sides of a sporting event to guarantee a minimum gain or loss. A greater investigation confirmed that bets and purchases in the locations of the gas bar were made using gift cards obtained fraudulently.”
