Canada, India agrees to restore diplomatic services after leaders meet in G7 – National

Canada and India agreed to designate new high commissioners and restore regular diplomatic services to citizens in both countries, after a meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Prime Minister Narendra Modi outside the G7 summit in Alberta.

The prime minister’s office confirmed the move in a reading of the meeting on Tuesday.

Canada expelled six Indian diplomats and consular officials last fall, after the news that the police had linked to the agents of the Indian government with a campaign directed against Canadian citizens.

India He expelled the interim Canadian high commissioner in New Delhi and five other Canadian diplomats the past fall in response, and the positions have remained vacant since then.

India has been indicated by Canadian intelligence officials as a prolific perpetrator of foreign interference in Canada, including transnational repression, a problem that G7 leaders pointed out in one of several joint statements issued as their completed summit.

In 2023 and 2024, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the RCMP said there was evidence that linked the Indian government agents with the murder of the Canadian separatist activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, BC, in June 2023.

Last October, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme said the police force had evidence that linked Indian government officials with other crimes in Canada, including extortion, coercion and homicide.

G7 leaders pointed out in a joint statement that they are “deeply concerned about the growing reports of transnational repression,” defined in the declaration as an aggressive form of foreign interference in which the states or their representatives try to intimidate, harass, damage or coincide with the people outside their edges.

The declaration condemns all forms of transnational repression, which may include a variety of activities from murder to cybernetic cybervilance.

Ask member countries to inform about transnational repression in the public reports of the rapid response mechanism of the G7, and develop a framework to cooperate to counteract such activities.
