‘Bhikhari ki aulad’: Rapido driver insults and threatens Mumbai woman after dispute over extra charge; Netizens say: ‘Why is it always Fast?’

A Mumbai-based technology professional, Ohshin Bhat, alleged that a Rapido taxi driver verbally abused and threatened her after she refused to pay an additional fare for her ride. On social media platform

Bhat shared that he had booked a ride through Rapido’s Economy service, which typically offers more affordable rides in hatchback vehicles. However, the assigned vehicle was from Rapido’s Premium category, which typically consists of sedans with higher rates. The driver, apparently including his vehicle in both categories to secure more reservations, demanded additional payment.

When Bhat refused to pay the extra charge, the driver allegedly became aggressive. In the screenshot she posted, he allegedly wrote: “Cancel kar do varna pel dunga khade khade” (Cancel the trip or I will beat you up right here). He also insulted her with comments like “Bhikhari ki malasad” (daughter of a beggar) and mocked her financial decisions by saying, “Saste me chahiye payal ja” (If you want it cheap, walk).

Bhat mentioned that he eventually canceled the ride and booked another cab through Uber, while the Rapido driver canceled the booking himself after the incident. Speaking to Hindustan Times, he expressed concern over the inappropriate conduct displayed by the service provider.

In response to the allegations, Rapido issued a public apology through its customer service at X. The company stated: “We fully understand the seriousness of this matter and deeply apologize for the captain’s unprofessional behavior. Please Please share trip details via DM so we can prioritize actions against the captain and provide updates.”

The incident sparked widespread criticism of Rapido, with many users calling for stricter measures and better driver vetting procedures.

One user asked: “What’s going on in the world? Why is it always Fast?”

Another shared: “I had a similar incident, but mine was with the Rapido customer service team!”

This episode adds to a growing list of complaints about inappropriate and threatening behavior by ride-hailing drivers, highlighting ongoing concerns about passenger safety and liability in the expanding gig economy.
