BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024: Keely Hodgkinson beats Luke Littler to be crowned Olympic 800m champion | darts news

Keely Hodgkinson won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024 award and runner-up Luke Littler took out the Young SPOTY award.

Hodgkinson completed his rise to athletics stardom by winning 800m gold for Great Britain at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Littler, who started last year’s World Darts Championships as a 16-year-old, was defeated in the final at Alexandra Palace, but his success had an incredible impact on the popularity of the sport.

Joe Root, who became England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer in October, finished third. Sarah Storey, Alex Yee and Jude Bellingham were the other finalists in the public vote.

What a year it has been for Luke Littler, from his World Championship breakthrough as a 17-year-old to winning the Premier League title. We take a look at its surprising 2024.

Hodgkinson burst onto the world stage at the age of 19 by winning the silver medal in the 800 meters at the Tokyo Olympics.

Few outside the British athletics scene had heard of her at the time, except those who did know she was destined for stardom.

He claimed two silver medals at the World Championships before finally delivering a golden evening in early August in Paris.

Hodgkinson’s success makes it an unprecedented fourth consecutive year that the award has been won by a woman, following Mary Earps in 2023, Beth Mead in 2022 and Emma Raducanu in 2021.

Littler has had a sensational year in 2024, claiming 10 titles, including his first ranking major at the Grand Slam of Darts, a feat only completed before by Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright.

Littler’s meteoric rise has made him the face of the sport, with players like David Beckham sending him good luck messages as he rose from junior world champion to the center of the professional game.
