Everton were praised by stand-in manager Leighton Baines after claiming a 2-0 FA Cup victory against Peterborough just hours after Sean Dyche’s sacking.
Former full-back Baines, who has been in charge of Everton’s under-18 team, and club captain Seamus Coleman were announced as interim coaches just three hours before the third round match at Goodison Park.
Goals from Beto and Iliman Ndiaye saw the side through to the Premier League and Baines said: “I thought their application was brilliant.
“Losing managers and coaches is not what anyone wants, that usually means that something has not gone quite right, and that is never the fault of one person, but of many people who are involved in it.

“For a coach to lose his job is not good and it usually happens after a difficult period, not just a difficult day, and that’s how it has been.
“But I think that within all of that there definitely now has to be hope and optimism. That’s something we’ve talked about. Things are changing, the football club, the property, the stadium.
“The coach has had to leave and that is not what anyone wants. But a new coach will arrive and that will bring opportunities.”
Baines, who stressed that he does not plan to run for the permanent position and that he does not know if he will continue in the interim position next Wednesday, also spoke about Armando Broja, after the forward left on a stretcher at the last minute. .
He said: “It looked bad. “We don’t know the extent, other than it’s a leg injury, but he hasn’t been taken to the hospital, so I took that as a good sign.”
Ashley Young came on for Everton in the 73rd minute, but the introduction of her son Tyler Young from the Peterborough bench failed to materialise.
And Posh manager Darren Ferguson said: “If the game had been 2-0 at the time I would have put him in, but it’s 1-0, I’ve got to put in a striker.
“We’re not a charity case, as much as I want Tyler to get along with his dad.
“One of their (Everton) players got a bit angry with me, which is out of character. “I have to do what is best for our team and at that moment, 1-0, I am trying to get a result.”
