Astronomers have seen a mass radio plane in the early universe, which they say is the greatest known of that time.
The plane measures at least 200,000 light years, which makes it twice the width of the Milky Way. It was formed when the universe was less than 10% of its current age of approximately 13.77 billion years. Although the Jet is not the greatest in the known history of the universe, its size and notable age ask questions about the source of these jets, some of the most exotic objects in the universe. The research of the team describing the plane is published Today in The letters of Astrophysics magazine.
“There is the idea that perhaps the most powerful airplanes are created from the most massive black holes or black holes that are very accumulating material near the theoretical limit,” said Anniek Gloudemans, an astronomer from Noirlab and main author of the Research, in an email to Gizmodo. “Therefore, perhaps we expected that this newly discovered jet organized an extraordinary black hole, but this was not the case.”
Radio jets are familiar objects in our nearby universe, but they are much rarely, or at least less known, in the early universe. The recently studied jet leaves a quasar, or an energetic galactic nucleus, called J1601+3102. Astronomers first identified the jet in low frequency matrix (Lofar) telescope, and the details of the jet and their source quasar were collected by observations with the nearly infrared infrared spectrograph of Gemini (Gnirs) and the Hobby Eberly Telescope.
The plane is seen then throwing from its quasar, a reddish spot, when the universe had less than 1.2 billion years. The quasar in question is relatively small, only 450 million times the mass of our sun. Therefore, the stream of the jet is a surprise compared to its relatively modest guest.
According to a Noirlab releaseThe scarcity of large radio jets until time may be due to the radiation of the cosmic microwave background, whose noise drowns the radio light. The only reason the team could see this particular plane is that it is huge for its age.
The largest known aircraft, which together form a mega -structure called Porphyrion, were discovered last year and last 23 million light years. That is more than ten times the size of J1601+3102. If Porphyrion airplanes were as wide as our planet, the black hole that feeds them would be the size of an amoeba. However, the Gloudemans team can only see the J1601+3102 plane as it appears at this time in the early universe.
“We observed this plane, since it was 12.4 billion years ago, so over time it will have grown. Porphyrion is an extremely large giant at a distance of approximately 7.5 billion light years, ”said Gloumes. “Our recently discovered jet does not approach the size of 23 million years of porfirion light, however, it does provide evidence of large radio jets already previously in force in the history of the universe.”
The researchers who studied Porphyrion postulated that the planes so great probably affect the growth of their host galaxies and other nearby.
There are many questions, including the way in which airplanes are formed by their environments and, in turn, form them. The jury is also on what massive objects they produce what types of airplanes, and how large the airplanes can grow. As astronomers collect more observations, new instruments such as the square kilometers will help them in their search, the incredible diversity of these extreme objects and their origins can be clear.
