Ravichandran Ashwin reflected on India’s promise of home dominance after loss to England in 2012
Ravichandran Ashwin reflects on India’s 2012 home test series defeat to England and vows to ensure India’s dominance at home. His promise fueled India’s record 18 consecutive home series wins, solidifying his legacy as one of India’s greatest match-winners and second-highest Test wicket-taker. Veteran Indian player Ravichandran Ashwin opened up about the turning point early in his career. After India’s 2012 Test series loss to England at home, Ashwin vowed to never allow another series defeat at home. This promise became a driving force in his career as he led India’s dominance.
Speaking in a BCCI tribute video, Ashwin recalled the emotional moment that shaped his resolve. “Look, I don’t think I know where to start, honestly. I made a promise to myself in 2012. We lost the series against England, a difficult series. It was very early in my career and I was telling myself, we’re not going to lose another one ever again, and that’s what I promised myself. How many grounds you take, how many hours of running you do, in 10 years, you won’t remember. What matters are the memories,” Ashwin said in a video released by the BCCI.
India, under his influence, won a world record 18 consecutive Test series at home over the next 11 years. During this run, Ashwin played a pivotal role, taking 320 wickets in 53 home matches with remarkable consistency.
Ashwin concluded his illustrious Test career as India’s second highest wicket-taker with 537 wickets in 106 matches. He has scored over 1,500 runs, including three centuries with his impressive batting.
Reflecting on his journey, Ashwin expressed his gratitude. “But if someone had told me in 2011 that I would get so many wickets, I would retire in 2024, on December 18. I wouldn’t have believed them because I knew this is a game I loved, but I never expected that it would get so much love and so many wickets and so many runs too. I am very happy, a deep feeling of gratitude for everyone who supported me, everyone who challenged me. Very happy today. Thank you,” he added.
Notably, Ashwin won 11 Player of the Series awards, tying Muttiah Muralitharan’s record in the history of Test cricket. His match-winning performances cemented his status as one of India’s all-time great all-rounders.
